Drew could admit that at first, she had had no romantic interest in Percy whatsoever. She'd fallen in love with Jason Grace at first sight - or so she'd thought. That's why she'd hated Piper so much. But after the wars, when Percy returned with Annabeth at his side, she'd realised something -
Why have a prince, when you could have the king?
And she also had to admit that, despite the shred of guilt she felt about the hysterical Annabeth who'd been locked in the basement of the Big House until she calmed down, leaning on Percy's shoulder whilst she sobbed about Drew sneaking into her cabin and trying to impersonate her - it felt good.
Percy murmured reassurances and stroked her soft blonde curls. His warm breath tickled her ear. Time passed, and as the sun set Drew began to lean in. This was it.
Their heads tilted together. Drew licked Annabeth's lips and tried to control her breathing, then she leant in.
A moment before their lips connected, Percy pulled back. What? Drew looked up at him, brow furrowed. "What's wrong?"
Percy nodded subtly over at the porch of the big house, where Annabeth was stood in Drew's skin. "I wouldn't mind, but you said not to whilst she was watching." Percy leant back, his arm falling from her shoulders, and the moment passed."Oh- oh yeah," Drew stuttered, the adrenaline rush fading.
Percy was still staring intently at Annabeth, who was still watching them.He can't know. Is he suspicious? What if he figures it out?!
"You know, I didn't realise until you mentioned it, but it is kind of creepy, isn't it?"
Oh
Drew didn't say anything. He hadn't even noticed all her efforts.
"If you weren't so insistent, I would just carry on as usual. Maybe she would get the hint. Oh no, now she's crying."
Drew realised with a pang that Annabeth was in fact crying, Drew's mascara staining her cheeks in little black rivulets. Somewhere under the ocean of pain and longing she felt for Percy, Drew felt a twinge of guilt that she had done this to the girl when Annabeth had been trying to protect her.
No. If she wants me to be happy, she'll let me have Percy.
"Are you alright? You're very quiet." Drew snapped her gaze away from Annabeth to find Percy looking at her, concern evident in his eyes. "Not worried that I'll leave you for her, are you?"
Yes, I am.
Drew just gave a fake, pained smile and shook her head, snuggling further into his chest.
"I'm fine. Everything's alright now."
