"Kirk?" I jiggled his shoulder.
No response.
I tried to be patient. I really did. But Miles had been gone for a couple hours, and Kirk and I hadn't even finalized our plans for the night. "Kirk?"
"If you say my name one more time, I will punch a hole through your throat." His head was still under his pillow but the threat came in clear.
"Sorry. I just wanted to know when you wanted to leave."
He rolled over and looked at his watch. "You're right. Big day planned."
"Great, yeah!" I was shocked at how fast he got off of the couch and started digging through his bag. "I don't need much time to get ready because Gabby and I are –"
"Ohhhhhh, no. I meant big day for me." Kirk found some gym shorts and a tank top and held them up. "I have a car again. I can't waste that."
Wow. Had he forgotten already? "A car that I helped you get."
Kirk shrieked and clutched his stomach. "Oh... that's cute..." He said, between wheezes. "That's really cute."
"It's true!" The only reason Miles had left him that car was so that he could drive me to Brody's.
"Who told you to sulk?"
Okay, that had been good advice. It worked way faster than my usual strategy of snarky comments.
"And who spent all night sweeping the kitchen after you almost blew it?"
I looked away.
"And who talked to Miles when—"
"You did." He wasn't going to stop talking until I admitted it, so I'd rather just get it over with.
"That's what I thought." He sauntered toward the bathroom and I followed him. "Do you mind?" he asked. "I'm trying to get changed."
The door closed on me, but it didn't stop me from talking. "Where are you even going anyway?"
"First: the gym."
"There's a gym here."
"A good gym," he clarified. "Want to hit up that sauna."
The man had access to a car for two and a half hours and he was suddenly bougie enough to go to the sauna?
"How long is that going to take?"
"Dunno, I have more shit to do after."
I heard the sink start running. I collapsed onto Miles' bed and checked the time on my phone. Ideally, I wanted to get to Gabby's by early afternoon. But I'd be lucky if that happened now.
When Kirk finally emerged from the bathroom again, I was ready with more questions. "So what am I supposed to do while you're gone?"
"Well, I guess you can either wait 'til I get back, or you can find a new ride."
"Okay, I'll just text you if find someone, then."
Kirk gritted his teeth. "About that..."
"What now?"
"Remember that detail we talked about?"
Honestly, I hadn't. It all came flooding back to me in that moment.
"I'm going to need to hold on to your phone."
"Why?!" This had to be a joke. A trick. What could he possibly need with my phone?
