-Just a little mood setting music. you'll understand were it comes in. Enjoy :)
It didn’t seem to take any time at all for me to arrive in Virginia. I stood by and watched as the soldiers took their places aboard. The sergeant was giving the men a speech or a little pep talk. I’m sure it was very good. The problem was I wasn’t listening. I tried to focus because it might have been the last speech I would hear or it was real important but I just stared at the soldiers. Some were shaking, some were pumped, and some were just starring at the floor. I wasn’t doing much thinking myself. I was just spaced out. The whole flight over I was thinking of Billie and what it was like in Sudan and my return back home.
“Armstrong.” The sergeant grabbed my shoulders and shook me. “ARMSTRONG!” I was startled. Even though the loud engine made it hard to hear, it was like a loud horn snapping me back into reality.
“Yes sir? Sorry sir!” I straightened my posture.
“Time to focus up! So pull your head out of your ass and get this plane moving! Close that hatch!”
“Yes sir!” I ran and pulled the lever making the back seal, then ran to my seat. I flicked switches over head and flopped in my seat. I fixed my headset and fastened my straps.
“All clear for takeoff number 4. Use runway 2” I heard in my head piece.
“Roger that, heading for runway number 2.” I set the plane in motion and we were once again back in the air.
I was a bit nervous, which I always was the first few minutes in the air. I couldn’t get over the fact that a girl as small as me could keep something so big in the air with such ease. I listened to the guys in the back as they chattered about life, family, Sudan, and what they would do when they get back. The first few hours I was too concentrated on my coordinates to join the conversations, but I was pulled in.
“So Armstrong, What are you gonna do when you get back?” Chris asked.
“I’m not sure yet.”
“Well you’ll be back tomorrow sometime so you better figure it out.”
“I bet she’ll have dirty sex with her husband!” I quickly turned squinting my eyes to see Jimmy. He was this kid who was at training the same time I was. “Well atleast that’s what I’m gonna do with my wife.” He smiled and gave the guy next to him a high five. I just laughed and shook my head turning back around.
“No really what are you gonna do?” Chris continued with our conversation. I just stared out the window looking at the clouds thinking. I smiled.
“Well I think I’ll count my lucky stars and thank the heavens I’m back. Then I’m going to rest in my husband’s arms, have a nice dinner… and then get to makin babies.” I giggled.
“I KNEW IT!” Jimmy yelled. I smiled. That really wasn’t a bad idea.
“Alright, alright, I think we should let our beautiful pilot get back to what she’s doing. We’d hate to be the reason we land at the wrong base.” I heard a stern voice from the back say.
“Thank you.” I started thinking about what I said. I would love to have children, no less than two.
I began imagining what our lives would be like living in a mansion with kids running around. Some of Frank’s ideas such as a moat popped up with ducks standing guard. I could see a child playing with Frank in the floor. Two surrounding Mike on the couch as he was telling a story, and Billie walking up to me putting his hand on my pregnant belly. He kissed me on the cheek and we were happy. I continued day dreaming about the ideas; every so often I’d look out to see ocean. It wasn’t till I saw land that I grew nervous. What if I get seen by the enemy? All my happy thoughts started fading. They began twisting in a different direction, what once was everyone laughing and having a good time turned into crying in the rain. I was picturing my funeral. What would I be wearing? Would I be wearing anything? Would I have every piece of me intact or would I be blown to smithereens? What music would be playing? I felt a tear make a trail down my cheek. I blinked several times pulling myself out of that darkness and wiped it away. I looked at the time. I had been flying a total of almost ten hours since I left South Dakota. I looked at the map I was almost there.
