He pretended to be disgusted at her show of affection for about a second before grinning back. "No problem. Mom, Dad, Aunt Juleka asked if I could go over to her place at some point today to help her with a harmony. Is that alright?"
"Oh yeah!" Marinette said, searching for her purse. "Just be home in time for dinner and call me if you can't."
Adrian handed her the purse. "Alright, kids! In the van!"
Emma appeared in the doorway, make-up was done impeccably and her hair drawn half-back in a thick braid. Loose hairs fell about her shoulders in curls. "We'd be crazy early if we leave now!" she protested.
"We're dropping off Hugo first!" Luka called.
Emma sighed dramatically. "Okay, then."
"Wait," Marinette said. "I thought I was driving Hugo!"
"Nope!" Adrian called. "You're getting to work early."
"Thanks, Minou."
It wasn't until lunch that Emma realized she forgot to put on the earrings she had hastily stowed in her pocket on the way out of the door. She reached for them, but they were gone. She groaned. Mom would not be happy.
Nera Rossi was thrilled, however. And her mother would be too.
The Ladybug miraculous just sitting on a desk? Jackpot! The kwami was hiding somewhere, but as soon as Nera put on the earrings, Tikki appeared right in front of her. It was all Nera could do to not cackle maniacally. Her mother had told her enough rage-filled stories. Now was Lila's time for revenge. Nera ditched school, transforming and swinging across the city.
Adrian came home around lunchtime as always. He walked in and found Marinette staring dumbfounded at the TV. Her afternoon coffee mug was shattered on the floor and the hot beverage seeped across the floor, completely unnoticed by her.
"Marinette?"
She turned slowly to his voice and pointed a shaking hand at the TV.
The news showed a woman who looked scarily familiar enveloped in a color reversed version of the Ladybug suit.
"Ladybug, Cat Noir," the woman crooned. "I'm back! You thought you could just leave me in the ditch, but I'm back now! You two will give yourselves up and I shall have my revenge! You will pay for hurting me!"
Marinette collapsed into Adrian. "Emma...I left Tikki on the dresser..."
"Hey," he said soothingly. "This isn't anyone's fault. Lila...she was bound to seek revenge someday."
"But she has Tikki! It's my fault and now Tikki will be misused just like poor Nooru was."
Adrian set her down on the couch and stroked her hair. "It's just like old times, Bugaboo. There's a supervillain and now Paris needs its heroes. Let's go. Me and you against the world, m'lady."
Marinette took a shaky breath and looked at her husband. "Adrian, you're a teacher. I work for an incredibly prestigious fashion designer. We have three kids. There's no way we can go running around as part-time superheroes. Also, we're getting a bit too old for that."
He narrowed his eyes. "So what are you saying?"
"I think it's time for a new generation of superheroes." She dashed into their bedroom and opened the miracle box.
"Just what are you planning, Mare?"
She smirked, removing three familiar gems.
