"Is everything okay??" I asked cautiously. Lou shook his head, giving me a warning look. I shut up and sat next to Louis silently. Niall slapped Liam on his back and tried to get him to start talking. I knew the two of them were really close.
"Hey mate. How is everything, eh?" he said.
Liam looked up at him, then went back to being perfectly silent. Harry and Zayn's faces were carved out of stone, unreadable and serious. Louis got up and reached for one of the Wii remotes. "Who's up to continue another game of boxing?"
The silence in the room was deafening. I grabbed a remote and Niall did too just to fill the empty silence and the tension in the room. Paul got up and said something about needing to head back home for an emergency. I think he just wanted to let us work it out ourselves. Harry got up and locked himself in his room and Zayn went out for a smoke. Liam was sitting like a statue against the wall in the corner.
"Liam, mate, you okay?" Louis asked as he tried to hit Niall down. After the game, which I lost, I sat next to Liam and just rubbed his back. I felt like giving him a hug but I was afraid of his reaction so I settled for rubbing his back. He took my hand in his and just held it there. His hand was super huge and very warm, my hand kind of disappeared in his. The skin was rough and yet soft. I didn't know what to do but Niall and Lou got up and hid in Lou's room.
We were finally alone and Zayn started talking on the phone so I doubted he was coming back soon.
"What's going on?" I asked cautiously.
"It bothers me," he said. I waited for him to continue but he didn't. I gently prompted with a "what bothers you?"
"Them. You know, flirting with you all the time. I don't know why, I've seen them do it a thousand times with other girls and it doesn't bother me a bit. Mostly I think it's cause the girls are never that interesting. But you..." he paused. "I can't seem to figure you out."
"It's because you barely know me," I reminded him. "I just met you three weeks ago and we've talked all about three times, two of those was just empty talk."
He managed a small smile. "I know. And you just kind of intrigue me."
"How so?" I asked him.
"I don't know. You're really different. Girls usually are just one thing either they're just sporty or just nerdy but you seem to fill in a hundred different categories. You dress up really well, and I thought hey she's those designer types and then you show up in sweats and jeans and I'm thinking you're those laid back types. You're a med student, which means you're super smart and nerdy and then you're also really funny and relaxed. You're shy, but yet outgoing. Pretty yet you alternate between knowing it and hiding it. I can't seem to understand you."
"Well, you've just met me. Right now... I don't understand you either."
Harry came out. "Hey guys you ready to go to the fair? Niall can't stop talking about it." He rolled his eyes. "The food, mainly."
Lou reached for his car keys. "Let's go!" he cried, pulling Liam up. Zayn followed us wordlessly out the door with Niall and Harry. All of us shoved into the car, we made it to the fair in record time thanks to Lou's crazy driving. I was screaming the whole way there. Mostly "SLOW DOWN!!" or "WATCH OUT FOR THAT-"
Lou screeched into a parking spot and braked. "Let's go mate."
Everyone tumbled out of the car, unfazed by Lou's driving. "Is this how he drives EVERYWHERE?" I asked Liam.
He nodded and laughed. "Mostly. But since it isn't his car, really, so he doesn't care. But if it's his new Range Rover he drives like a turtle. Niall even came out of the car and ran alongside once. It was hilarious." He shot me that megawatt celebrity smile that probably made teenage girls scream hysterically.
