"Baby, are you listening to me?" Ruel asked, waving his hands in front of my face.
"Huh? Oh, um, yeah, what were you saying?" 
                          
He began turning around in his seat to see what I was looking at, but I grabbed his shoulders.
                          
"What were you saying?" I ask.
"Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, of course."
                          
"Um, okay. I'm going to use the restroom real quick, okay?"
"Wait, is it an emergency?"
"No?" he said, giving me a weird look. "But I'm going to go." 
He stood up, but I stood up in front of him.
"Ruel, wait, please don't leave me."
"Baby, I'm not leaving you. I'm just using the bathroom."
                          
"Please don't leave me here alone." 
"Okay, what's wrong? You've been acting weird since we got here."
"Um, n-nothing? I don't want you to leave me."
"Y/n, I'm not leaving you. If nothing is wrong, then why can't I use the bathroom?"
I bit my lip. He was staring me in my eyes and I was getting nervous.
                          
I felt someone hold on shoulders behind me and I jumped. I quickly turned around and when I saw who it was, I ran behind Ruel.
                          
"What's going on?" Ruel asked.
"Please don't leave me." I whispered to him.
                          
"Y/n!" he called.
"Baby, you're shaking. Who is this?" Ruel asked.
                          
"He, um, well-"
                          
"I'm her boyfriend."
"Ex." I said.
                          
"Dude, she's my girlfriend." Ruel said, hiding me behind his back.
"She said she wanted a break. It's been a year, y/n! I've been waiting."
"I told you we were breaking up!"
"Well, I never agreed!"
"You don't need to agree for me to break up with you."
"You are mine." 
                          
"Ruel, can we leave?"
"Hold on, babe. This guy needs to be put into his place."
                          
"She's not yours. She's clearly moved on. If you think you can just come up and expect her to come back to you, you're clearly mistaken. Leave us alone."
"I can't believe you downgraded."
"Excuse me?" Ruel asked, irritated.
                          
"He's the best boyfriend I've ever had. He is beyond better than you. Ruel actually treats me right, unlike you."
"Wow, since when were you able to stand up for yourself. Woah, dude, you hear this?" his voice was laced with sarcasm.
                          
I held onto Ruel's hand.
                          
"Excuse me, sir, you are disrupting the area. We are gonna have to ask you to leave." a worker said, coming up to us.
                          
"Ruel, can we leave now?"
He nodded.
                          
"I apologize for his behavior." Ruel said to the worker.
                          
We left the cafe and began walking back to our apartment a few blocks away.
                          
"Are you okay, y/n?"
I nodded. "Thank you."
"Of course. I'm always gonna protect my baby." 
"You're the best."
"That's because you're my painkiller." he said, winking.
I playfully pushed him gently, laughing.
                          
"I don't know how you dealt with him."
"Neither do I. I mean, I guess since he was my first boyfriend, I didn't really know how relationships worked. When he told me he loved me, I believed him and I thought I loved him too. Nine months into dating him, he started acting different. Now that I'm with you, I know how you're supposed to treat your significant other."
"He never forced you to do anything or anything like that, right?"
"Thankfully no. He just was always distant and stopped doing things with me. I know that he knew we wouldn't, I'm assuming he just didn't want to accept it. I mean, we didn't see each other for the last couple months of our relationship. He was always out and doing things."
"Like?"
"The typical "bad boy" kinda stuff." I said, laughing.
                          
"Has he ever, you know, um-"
"Cheated?" I ask, looking at him.
He nodded.
"Yeah, a couple times."
"And you didn't leave him right away?" Ruel asked, surprised.
"No, because he was always saying sorry and telling me it was a drunken mistake. Looking back at it, I was so stupid."
"Yeah, you were."
                          
"Hey!" I said.
"Sorry, babe. I don't lie." he said, grinning.
I rolled my eyes, intertwining our fingers.
                          
"You broke things off, correct?"
"Yeah."
He stopped walking and stood in front of me.
"I'm proud of you for doing so." 
"Thanks, bubby." I smiled, connecting our lips.
