Chapter Two ~ Family Means Everything

Part One ~ "The Kids Aren't All Right"

'They have your mom and dad.' 'They have your mom and dad.' 'They have your mom and dad.'

Jasmine stared at Sam and repeated the words like a chant over and over again in her head. He broke eye contact with her quickly but Bobby watched her cautiously and quietly, waiting to see her reaction to the news.

'They have your mom and dad.'

"What about Daniel? My brother? Did he say anything about Dan?"

'They have your mom and dad.'

"No. I'm sorry, Jaz."

'They have your mom and dad.'

"I have to get them back."

"That might not be..." Sam searched for the right word. "Easy."

"I don't care," Jasmine said. "I'll get them back. Even if I die trying."

"You don't have to do this alone, Jasmine," Bobby said. "You need help. Don't run off into the fire."

She clenched her good hand into a fist. "I won't have Sam getting hurt in the process. Or you."

"Look," said Bobby, "family means everything. I get that. They're your blood. And they're in trouble. But believe me when I say that going into this like you want to isn't a good idea. You've had a long day. We all have. So why don't we take a breather for a bit and get some sleep?"

Jasmine took a slow breath and clenched her jaw instead of her fist. "Alright. You're wiser than me. I get it. This isn't something I can do alone. Thanks, Bobby."

I am not alone, she thought. I'm not. I never will be. Not anymore.

He gave her a strict nod. "Damn straight." He pushed himself off of his desk again. "I need your two's help with somethin' 'fore we turn in. Not one of those one man jobs, if you get me."

"'Course," said Jasmine. "Lead the way."

"Yeah..." said Sam.

Bobby led the pair downstairs and into the dark basement. "In the panic room there's this big box of papers. I can't quite get it to budge. Old man syndrome, I s'pose."

Jasmine chuckled quietly as he popped the panic room door open. "No problem. We all have those days, right?"

"Right."

Sam followed her in and she did a three-sixty. There wasn't a box of papers, unless you count a few books on the metal desk by the wall. "Er, Bobby, there's no box in here..."

The panic room door slammed shut with a loud creak and the small eye hole opened. Bobby's eyes appeared. "Oops. Musta forgot I already moved it."

Sam sighed. "Bobby, this isn't funny. Let us out."

"You two are avoidin' each other like ex-friends with benefits," the elder said. "Nuh-uh. Talk it out or do whatever it is you need to do. Call me when you've figured it out."
