NATE
"You go first, since this game was your idea." I ordered jokingly as I sat on opposite side of the couch from Dani, facing her in a cross legged position.
I watched as she stared at me intently for a moment, as if she was thinking of a good question. She looked adorable when she made her dumb little thinking face.
"Do you have a job?" She finally asked.
"Well yes," I laughed. "Bills don't pay themselves. I got a job at a car place a few minutes from here."
"Oh?" She seemed surprised. "I didn't know you knew how to work on cars."
"I don't." I scoffed. "I do like custom paint jobs on them and stuff. It's kinda fun actually. I also have a side job at this restaurant called Ace's."
Yeah, I work two jobs here in New York. They're not much, and the waiter job is pretty boring, but it's been something to keep me busy. To keep my mind off things; things like Dani.
Quitting the job at Ace's will be easy when I go back, but I don't really want to part with the custom car paint job, it really is fun. I love art, and Dani told me to never stop, and I wouldn't. Maybe I could find a new similar job back in San Diego. Maybe even open my own place someday.
"Wow, your two favorite things, cars and art." Dani smiled at me from across the couch. "I'm glad you're doing something you like, really. Anyways, it's your turn."
I began to think for a moment. There were a million questions I wanted to ask, but which one should go first? I decided to take the easiest route.
"Not to steal your question or anything, but what about you? Do you have a job?" I questioned Dani.
"Yeah." She stated as she looked down at her palms, suddenly acting... shy?
"Well, what is it?" I pried with a laugh. "Stop being so shy."
Dani shifted her gaze up at me and shot me a small smile before speaking.
"I run a few support programs and do counseling on weekdays." She stated, looking back down at her hands.
Counseling? Support programs?
"What for?" I asked aloud.
"Rape and sexual assault victims." Dani's voice was small and timid, just like it always got when she spoke on matters like this.
"That's actually really cool of you, Dani." I admitted with a smile.
She really was brave and I kind of loved knowing that's what she does. Maybe speaking with other people with similar stories has helped her heal.
"My turn." She dropped the subject, quickly moving on. "How long have you been in New York?"
"Since the day you left." I explained sheepishly. "I wasn't letting you come here alone."
