~Yato's POV~

"I thought I'd find you here," the familiar voice says, the hint of a smile tugging at his tone.

I keep my back to him, though I can still hear him approaching me. I didn't expect him to look for me and I certainly didn't expect him to find me. Then again, he is the God of Academics. He's wise and intuitive. It's not like he needed a detective to trace me down. Or I'm just that easy to read.

"It's been a while since you've come here. What brought you back?" he presses, finally reaching the spot next to me.

Our eyes both linger on the small wooden shrine before us. It's not old. In fact, it's pretty new but due to lack of upkeep, it's practically decaying. Overgrown grass covers it as the paint chips. The weather has worn on it, beating it with every storm and snow, but it's still here.

"Memories," I reply, turning to my old friend, Tenjin.

"Memories?" he questions. "What memories would that be?"

I huff, "Just...ya know...memories. The kind you remember. That's all."

Tenjin lifts a single eyebrow. He can see through my excuse, but I don't care. I don't feel like elaborating with him on things like the past. I didn't come here for that. Not to exchange chitchat, I mean.

"Do you miss her?" he presses.

"I never said that," I mutter, kicking a small stone. "Besides, I'm a great and totally mighty god. So, why would I -"

"Your actions speak louder than your words, Yato," Tenjin interrupts, stepping closer to the little shrine. "My question is what suddenly brought this on?" He side glances at me, adding, "You wouldn't be thinking of getting her involved again, would you?"

I tighten my hands into fists in my pockets. I could. I could so easily do that, couldn't I? I did it once. So, what would stop me this time? Maybe it's the fact that she's finally living a normal life. A normal life that doesn't have me in it. Man, that freakin' stings.

I breathe, "No. I wouldn't do that to her. Not again."

"Good, good," he beams, patting my back. He takes a short pause, adding, "Just make sure you don't get anyone else involved either."

I hold my breath.

Damn it.
