"We need to talk"
"You said you wouldn't be here for weeks", I say in somewhat of an accusatory tone.
"Yeah, yeah, it's good to see you too", he rolls his eyes
"How do you remember? Everyone who has come up in that box before has no memory of anything whatsoever. Except their name, which isn't real either "
"Everyone except you", Ben points out.
I shoot him a meaningful look and he responds, suddenly serious-
"Look, even I'm going to forget"
"What do you mean you're going to forget?", I say, suddenly alert
"I'm not going to remember anything in an hour. When WICKED wipes your memory, it takes a few hours to completely be erased. I got in that box earlier than I was supposed to, and so I still remember some things"
"How do you remember only certain things?"
"There's a trigger. You were someone I couldn't forget easily, so you acted as a trigger. You were a crack in my wiped memory which caused other memories to surface. Like fissures"
He remembered me.
"Why did you come?", I asked in a disappointed tone
"You didn't want me to come?", he asks
"It's not that", I say. "You could have been safe now in WICKED. You could have had a normal life. "
"Without you?", he asks incredulously
"Don't be so dramatic. You would have gotten over it", I tell him.
He laughs bitterly. "You've always put everyone before yourselves, that's why you're in this maze right now. You seem to think that in some way everyone else is more important than you, you seem to think that saving others is more important than saving yourselves. You think that it's your job to protect them, to take the blow yourself, all of which isn't true! You don't realize that you're worth saving above everything else!", his voice grows louder by each sentence. I give him a meaningful look. "To me at least", he breathes out the last sentence exasperatedly.
"Ben..."
His face suddenly grows solemn. "Did you tell anyone that you got your memory back?"
"No", I answer confidently
He narrows his eyes slightly. "Are you sure?"
I grow tentative by the second. "I must have mumbled something about remembering to Minho before I fell asleep"
"Nothing significant, right? You didn't magnify what you said?"
"No"
He sighed, satisfied for the moment
"You can't tell anyone", he reminds. "I'm pretty sure you know why"
I do know why. Anyone who knows anything could be I danger. If word about WICKED, the creators gets out, the whole experiment would fail, and for safety purposes, they'd have to kill everyone. Things were tight already.
"Millie"
Something in his tone made me look at him.
"You need to forget too"
I look at him like he's grown two heads. "What?"
"It's the only way to keep you safe"
"I'm not going to forget Ben!", I hiss. "How can I?"
"I have a solution for that problem", he removes something that looks like a syringe from his pocket which consisted of a light blue liquid that looked much like a lab chemical.
"I don't want to forget. And won't the guys get suspicious if I suddenly forget everything?", I argue
"It will only erase selective memories"
"WICKED's memory wiping procedure didn't work on me, so why will this?", I rationalize
"Because WICKED wanted to erase your memory completely. They wanted to extract all the memories and store it in the Swipe that has been implanted in your brain. This-", he points to the syringe, "Will only bury those memories until a counter reactant is given to wipe this chemical from inside you and let your memory re-surface"
I keep quiet, looking at the ground
"You know why you have to do this, Millie", he whispers
I eye the syringe warily.
If I wanted to protect everyone around me, including myself, I had to do this.
Without another thought, I snatch the syringe from his hand and stab it into my arm savagely, releasing the substances into my blood.
I look up at Ben to see that he is looking at me in shock, probably because of my sudden action
I don't feel the tears stinging my eyes until they cloud my vision.
Ben says nothing but wraps his arms around me in a comforting embrace. It felt safe. It felt like... home.
I pull back and stare into his eyes, that let themselves show the emotions that they hid, freely around me
He started to move closer until the door suddenly opened. And I was felt slightly guilty- I don't know why- when I saw who was standing in the doorway.
Minho.
