"So?" Galaxy Girl asked as her nemesis slid into the driver's seat and started the engine.
"He doesn't remember a thing."They drove right past the gate yet again, even giving the guard a wave. Drive it like you own it and nobody even thinks to stop you! The camera was still on a loop, so the genius had no worries about walking around the garage in their attire.
"Don't worry Galaxy, nobody saw you, so our cover here isn't blown. There will be another chance to get to them. I have faith in you." He tried to reassure her as he held open the car door for her to exit. It was more practical than polite for him, because who wanted their car door ripped off by a strong superhero?"Thanks, that means a lot. I don't know though... I can't even think straight right now."
She sighed, grabbing his outstretched hand to help her get up.
"Then don't think." He advised.
"Just get some sleep."
Thanks to a security pass he'd swiped from one of the maids, and had painstakingly reprogrammed to let them in through the least used employee entrance, without alerting security of the door being opened, they finally made it, undetected back to their room. The clock on the dresser said it was only one in the morning but Galaxy Girl's time zone altered algorithms felt as though it were much later.
They changed out of their costumes and each of them crawled onto the bed.
"Now go to sleep. You will feel better in the morning." He promised, switching off the light."I don't want to go to sleep, I'll just have nightmares... about that night." She gulped.
“P.T.S.D. I knew it.” Toxic muttered to himself.
"You've been having nightmares? Why didn't you tell me?" He turned over to face her.
"So you could do what? Laugh at me?" She stated glumly, her back towards him."That's post-traumatic stress disorder, and you must think pretty low of me to assume I’d laugh at you for that." He reached out and tugged on her shoulder, willing her to face him.
"Talk to me." He pleaded sincerely.
"Let me put one of my theoretical doctorates to some use.""I dream about my death, and it scares the heck out of me!" she admitted, exhaling slowly.
"I can't breathe, and there is so much blood everywhere! I've been having them every night. Well, every night except last night.""What did you dream about last night?" Toxic puzzled at the sudden change in pattern.
"Nothing." She replied. "I just felt incredibly warm and safe."
He contemplated this for a moment, perfect dark eyebrows arching in the darkness, coming to a logical conclusion that by rolling over to his side, the connection of their powers must have brought about some form of relief of her symptoms. With her fragile state in mind, the career criminal took in a deep breath.
"Come here." He spoke, holding an arm out."What?"
Even in the darkness, he could sense her giving him the oddest look.
"Don't argue, just come here. I'll hold you and you won't have any bad dreams. I promise."
A few seconds of silence in the darkness passed before she gave in and shuffled closer.Galaxy cautiously lay her head on his chest, eyes holding his the entire time; as though expecting that any moment from now, this magical moment would disappear with Toxic screaming out: “Gotcha!" .
To set her at ease, he wrapped the arm that she lay on, around her back.
"Better?" He questioned. To which she just let out a nervous laugh. "You are really warm."
"Yeah the radiation in my system permanently raises my body temperature."
"Is that why you sleep without a shirt on?"
She tilted her head back to look at him.
"Part of it." After a minute or so, her body relaxed and she snuggled closer."How can somebody so boney, be so incredibly comfortable?" She laughed.
Toxic rested his cheek against the top of her head.
"Was that compliment or an insult?" But she didn't answer, she was peacefully asleep.Even in her sleep, the Hero could still feel his incredible warmth. It seeped into her subconscious, she felt, in a word, safe.
