Trade Her Back

So, this is my first MCU story and I decided to make it simply because lately I've been upset that my favorite couple didn't ever get together. So, naturally, I'm just going to pretend like they did. Hope you enjoy!

This one shot will be Steve going to Vormir to return the soul Stone and trying to get Natasha back.

It does contain endgame spoilers, so if you still haven't seen it. I would advise not reading.

Steve's heart pounded with each step as he walked closer to Vormir.

He swore he could feel her around him. Like all the nights they had spent after missions and her presence had been enough to put him at ease.

He approached the cliff with the soul stone in hand. He knew that Bruce said it was impossible to get her back, but he didn't believe it. Not yet.

Appearing before him, the red skull scowled. "Steve. Son of a bitch. What do you want. The soul stone isn't here anymore."

Steve held it up in his hand. "I want to return it. In exchange for Natasha."

"That's not possible. As long as the soul stone is with you, the trade remains."

"Well I'm giving the stone back. So the trade should be reversed." Steve said, becoming exasperated.

"I'm afraid that's not how it works."

Steve attempted to grab the red skull but he moved out of his way. "Then change the rules! I'm trading the stone back for her."

"In order to do that, you'll have to climb down the cliff and put the stone where she fell. Only then will the trade stand a chance at working. But I make no promises."

Steve quickly walked towards the end of the cliff and looked down. Carefully, he lowered himself over the edge and found a foothold.

He slowly began to climb down the cliff. He knew if he fell there would be no surviving. He concentrated on each step he took. Constantly telling himself that if this worked, it would all be worth it.

Natasha had occupied his thoughts since they had first worked together. She was his best friend and partner, and more then that he was in love with her.

He had just never had the guts to tell her that.

It was ironic really, the great Captain America afraid to tell the girl he liked how he felt.

That's why he had to get her back. The  news of her death had crushed him, and their win over Thanos seemed meaningless without her by his side.

These were the thoughts that kept him going as each step down became more difficult.

Finding a good footing was harder now, the cliff was steeper and Steve was almost upside down.

If he wasn't a super soldier, he would have certainly fallen to his doom.

Hours later, Steve was almost to the bottom. When he was only about ten feet from the ground, he let go of the wall and landed on his feet.

It almost broke him. Seeing the red blood stain on the concrete ground, and knowing that was where she had met her end.

It took everything in him to approach the spot. He took the stone out of his pocket and placed it in the center of the stain.

Steve backed up and waited for something to happen.

A million thoughts ran through his head, maybe his old enemy had tricked him in hopes that he would die, or maybe the trade back really was impossible.

Steve remained still, not breathing, just waiting for something to happen.

"No..." He whispered in disbelief when nothing happened.

He went to pick up the stone again when a bright blue surge of energy errupted from the stone.

Steve stumbled back and watched as a bright light shine from the stone. Steve squinted and looked away until the light had faded.

When he finally looked back. He saw a body laying in place of the stone, Natasha's body.

He ran beside her and grabbed her by the shoulders. "Nat?"

Her eyes fluttered open and she looked at Steve with confusion. "Steve? What the hell happened?"

Relief flooded over Steve. "Oh my god Natasha, your alive."

"No, I can't be, I sacrificed myself so Clint could get the stone. Where is he? Is he alright?"

"He's fine. He's back on Earth with everyone else. We won Nat. We defeated Thanos and got everyone back. I traded the soul stone back in exchange for your life."

"We won?" She asked, a small smile appearing on her face.

Steve pulled her in for a hug. "Yeah. We did."

Natasha hugged Steve back, relief flooding her.

"How the hell did you end up down here." She asked, suddenly aware of their wereabouts.

"I climbed. The Red Skull told me that it was the only way to get you back."

Natasha scowled and punched his arm. "You dumbass! You could have gotten yourself killed."

Steve rubbed his arm. "Well I couldn't just leave you dead."

"Why the hell not?!"

Steve stared into Natasha's eyes and in that silent moment she understood, but he said it anyways. "Because I love you."

Natasha's eyes softened and she placed a gentle hand on Steve's shoulder. "You know, you probably should have just led with that." She said, laughing slightly before connecting their lips in a kiss that expressed all of her thanks. All of his relief. And most of all, all of the love they had for one another.

When Steve finally pulled away. He couldn't help the boyish grin that overtook his features. "I would have told you a long time ago if I knew you would react like that."

Natasha laughed.

Steve looked back up the cliff and frowned. "As much as I am enjoying this moment. We should probably find a way to get back up there." He said, pointing to the top of the cliff.

Natasha stood up and pointed to the far end of the cliff. "Are those stairs?"

Steve squinted and cursed. "Son of a bitch. They are."

Natasha couldn't help but chuckle. "Language." She joked.

Steve nudged her with his shoulder, "Watch it Romanoff."

She smirked and they walked over to the steps.

Steve didn't let go of Natasha's hand the whole way up the steps. He had just gotten her back and he wasn't going to let go of her anytime soon.

Natasha didn't seem to mind. This time, she didn't need to be let go by someone she loved.

When they reached the top of the cliff Steve didn't give the red skull a second glance as they walked by him.

"You couldn't have told me there was stairs?" Steve mumbled as they passed him.

Natasha laughed and rested her head on Steve's shoulder.

He wrapped his arm around her and handed her the brief case he had been carrying. Now that all the stones had been returned, only one thing was left inside.

She opened it and pulled out a quantum realm suit. "You brought an extra one?"

"Yeah, I was pretty hopeful I could get you back. So put it on and let's go home."

She smiled, and soon enough, they were headed home.

So, I hope you enjoyed. I have a lot of ideas for this but if you have any suggestions or prompts I will definitely try them. Please vote and comment if you enjoyed!!!

Also, I know alot of this is highly impossible, such as stairs up the cliff and Steve being able to climb down the cliff, but it's my story and that was how I wanted to write it, so please don't call me out for inaccurate info😂😂
