☾unavngivet - twenty-two

"Mark!"

Haechan waved his hand at the older who quickly made his way over to them, placing the wood he brought with him down onto the ground next to the fire.

Renjun joined them with some sticks they had cleaned. There were two blankets placed out on the ground and Chenle and Jisung claimed the biggest one, laying down onto it with arms and legs stretched out so none of the others could join them. Mark only chuckled at them, shaking his head as he sat down on the other blanket.

Haechan sat down next to him happily and snaked his hand around Mark's right arm. The older had gotten used to the many subtle touches they would share and didn't even realize Haechan was clinging on to him until the latter shook a little in excitement for whatever was about to happen.

Jeno sat down on Mark's left side and Jaemin was quick to join him, keeping a little space, of course. They still hadn't spoken with Renjun yet, and Jaemin was honestly really afraid to do so.

Renjun frowned as he saw the way Jaemin glanced at Jeno for a moment, but he shook it off knowing Jaemin loves Jeno as much as he loves him, and that he should respect that.

He still couldn't help but feel jealous, seeing his lover look at another person like that.

Renjun sighed and went around, giving a stick to everyone before taking a seat on the blanket next to Jaemin. The younger smiled at him and weirdly enough, Jeno did too.

While the rest were already munching down their marshmallow sandwiches, Mark was teaching Haechan how to make one.

They sat with their sticks resting over the bonfire which was nothing but fading embers at the moment.

Haechan was observing the marshmallow on his stick very intensely. Mark told him the moment it started to get brown he'd have to pull it back, so he waited patiently, very focused on his current mission.

Mark watched him fondly, and the moment Haechan smiled so happily, pulling back his stick from the warmth and proudly showing off the brown tinted marshmallow, Mark couldn't help but smile as well.

"It's perfect," the older complemented.

Haechan grinned satisfied and made a little dance in his current crouching position. He looked at Mark's stick and his eyes widened.

"Mark! Your marshmallow!"

Mark turned his attention back to the end of his stick, his facial expression changing completely as he saw his marshmallow had turned black and was slowly melting down from the stick. He sighed and shook it, causing the burned marshmallow to land on the dust below the firewood.

"Don't worry, I can make a new one," Mark smiled as he saw Haechan's uneasy look. "Let's finish making yours," he stood up and took two crackers from the tray Jaemin had brought over.

"You take these two like this," the older said and placed the crackers on each side of the sticky marshmallow. "Then you squeeze them together and pull it off the stick," he explained and gave the crackers to Haechan.

Haechan bit his lip with a serious gaze. He shifted a little and placed the crackers where Mark had shown him, squeezing them against each other and pulling off the marshmallow.

"You did it!" Mark cheered and the younger looked proudly at his first ever marshmallow sandwich.

Jaemin had fallen asleep on Renjun's lap.

Jeno stared at the sight with nothing but adoration. The way Renjun stroked Jaemin's fluffy hair made him scream inside of cuteness.

Although he was happy knowing Jaemin loved him back, Jeno couldn't help but also sadden as he knew Renjun felt nothing towards him but a friendly feeling. But at least he could look at them now with a tint of hope whereas his heart broke if he did so yesterday.

It had gotten pretty late. Chenle and Jisung were still wide awake, but the rest were getting really tired.

Haechan had begun singing.

Not anything in particular. He just put together some sounds, making up his own little language. He sang words in a melody he made up along the way as well. It was so strange but so calm and beautiful. Mark, who sat next to him, just closed his eyes and listened to Haechan's vocals swirling around his own beating heart like a threat finding its way through a needle.

"That was beautiful," Renjun told the younger once he finished. "We should sing together someday."

Haechan's eyes lit up. "You sing too?"

"Most of us sing, even Mark," Chenle chimed in.

Haechan grinned and turned his head, meeting Mark's eyes. He had never heard Mark sing, not even in the memories he held of Mark's life. "Sing for me," he pleaded and if it had been anyone else than Haechan asking, Mark would have said no immediately.

But this was Haechan.

"Okay," Mark smiled and cleared his throat. "I'll sing my favorite song," he said, a silence falling before Mark's voice started filling the space around the dying bonfire.

And just the first note.

The first little note...

...caused Haechan's head to spin like a spinning top. Mark's voice singing a song that sounded so awfully familiar became only fainter by the second as all sound around Haechan disappeared and a ringing tone took over. His sight darkened and the last thing he saw before everything went black was Mark yelling above him, eyes teary and expression frightened.

He fainted again.

But this time, the memories came back to him with rage, digging deep into his head.
