Thirty seconds later of pushing through the busy crowd themselves and they finally made it into the bank, uncanny silence assaulting his ears, unused to the quiet after the noise outside. As they made their way to the long line, Harry spotted the raven-haired man bypassing the line of people entirely. Harry could hear a few people grumbling about the cutting, but Harry just wanted to know what he was there for.
He gave a pointed look to his friends and let them distract anyone who could notice him slipping away from the group. Harry followed the man until he stopped, seeming to be waiting. Though he didn't wait long before a goblin made their way over from one of the closed offices. The goblin was sharply dressed with a monocle around one of his beady black eyes and a gold chain that most likely held a pocket watch in his pocket that draped around the front of the creature's waist. Harry peered around an empty desk that had a plate saying 'back in 10' to eavesdrop on the pair.
"Ah, Emrys, always a pleasure when you visit," the goblin greeted dryly. The man laughed slightly and waved the goblin off.
"Yes, I believe a few people didn't like the line cutting," mirth evident. The goblin grumbled, shaking his head, but didn't look like he actually cared what the man did. The wizard pulled out an ornate key, with once intricate details that now appeared soft and worn from age, which the head goblin examined until he was satisfied.
"Vault No. 4 I believe, follow me," he commanded and walked off, the raven-haired man close behind.
Blinking as the conversation tried to sort itself in his mind he made his way back to the others.
"Hermione?" Harry questioned, making her jump as he appeared behind her. She raised a brow in silent question," do you know who would have vault No. 4?" Hermione didn't hesitate to answer as she rocked back on her feet in obvious excitement.
"No, but not many know anything about the vaults that far down in the bank. Whoever's vault it is, it's likely their ancestor was the first to ever trust the goblins with their money?" Hermione rambled.
Harry opened his mouth to ask something else when Ron beat him to it.
"What do you mean, 'Mione? Wouldn't the first vault be given to the first person to bank here, not the fourth?" Confusion bleeding into his words. Hermione gave him a dubious look and Ron colored as he recognized the expression of fond exasperation. Harry was just glad that he didn't ask first, not wanting to be on the receiving end of Hermione's lectures.
"Honestly, Ron, don't you ever read! The first three vaults are filled with galleons, sickles, and knuts. So, the only logical conclusion would be that the forth was given to said witch or wizard," she explained, huffing. Ron raised his hands in a placating gesture. Harry bit back a smile as he watched his friends, holding it in only so Ron couldn't rat him out to Hermione to get her to turn her ire on him. Eventually, Harry had to stop their bickering as it was attracting the wrong sort of attention from the surrounding people, some giving them nasty glares in the otherwise silent room.
" So, that would mean that the man I overheard has vault No. 4, is from a really old family, older than the Malfoy's," Harry said, managing to get them to stop talking.
"Not necessarily, Harry. They were just the first to put their money in the bank, is all," Harry nodded but couldn't keep some of the disappointment from his expression. The Malfoys were known as one of the oldest wizarding families and the idea that one older than theirs was a bit exciting, though he didn't much like history, Professor Binns made it hard to.
The conversation drifted from there until they made it to the front of the line to collect their money, a tiny portion in the Weasley's vault, some money from the vault that lent money to muggle-born students for Hermione, and Harry's vault which he only grabbed a handful of each coin, knowing he would use at least some at Hogsmeade during the weekends.
