Chapter 10: What's Wrong With Hayley?
                          
Annie came down the stairs in the kitchen and sat down at the table.
                          
Annie: good morning boys
Boys: good morning
Annie: where's Dani?
Kevin: she had to visit her grandparents house this morning, because her grandpa was sick. So we have oatmeal for breakfast today 
Annie: oh
Nick: did you wake up you're sister?
Annie: who?
Nick: Annie
Annie: I'm kidding, of course I didn't forget Hayley, she told me to tell you guys she wasn't feeling well
Boys: what?
Nick: and you're just now telling us?
Annie: yes is there a problem
                          
Nick sighs and got up hurried to grab her diabetic kit and before rushing upstairs and Annie said.
                          
Annie: what, what's wrong?
Kevin: if Hayley is sick you need to tell us right away because sickness while 
being diabetic her levels can get mix up all over the place and sometimes she is either high or low or needs to be in hospital until her fever is down
Annie: oh I didn't know that
Kevin: well now you know
                          
With Hayley:
Hayley was in her bed covering herself and putting a pad over her head pretending to be sick. She hears footsteps and quickly hides the heat in pad and covers herself back up just as Nick enters the room.
                          
Nick: hey bug, Annie told me you weren't feeling too well this morning
Hayley: (lie) uh huh... I don't want to leave the bed
Nick: okay well let me feel your temperature first 
                          
Nick feels her forehead and he moved away quickly.
                          
Nick: woah kiddo you're burning up, I see you took your temperature too
Hayley: yeah I did, look
                          
Hayley showed him the theremother and he look at it and the temperature on the stick was higher than normal and he grew a bit suspicious.
                          
Nick: huh, this is higher than normal kiddo, when did you start feeling sick?
Hayley: (lies) this morning 
Nick: hmm...
Hayley: hmm.. what?
Nick: usually if you have this temperature you would be in the hospital
Hayley: I hate hospital
Nick: I know baby, but if you're feeling this sick than we have to go
Hayley: (gets up) but I feel better now Nicky, I don't need to go to the hospital
Nick: I figure you will feel better
Hayley: huh?
                          
Nick took something out from under her pillow and said.
                          
Nick: busted 
Hayley: (face blushed) oh...
Nick: what are you doing faking sick kiddo?
Hayley: I-I-
Nick: you know faking sick is like lying
Hayley: I didn't lie
Nick: lie of omission. Do you know how serious being sick while being diabetic is?
Hayley: no
Nick: it means that you're levels will be out of place all the time it might be low or high sometimes when you're sick
Hayley: oh, I didn't know that
Nick: well now you know, that's why you can't fake sick now because this is very serious kiddo
Hayley: I'm sorry Nicky
Nick: why don't you want to go to school today?
Hayley: I just don't want too
Nick: that's not a good enough reason
Hayley: it's b-because (lie) of a test we are taking in school
Nick: that's it? Hayley you have taken a lot of test in school
Hayley: I-I know but this one is different because if we don't do will it will detect what reading group we have to be in, and I don't want to be in the slow reading group
Nick: I'm sure you will do fine kiddo, you're a smart girl you just got to believe in yourself
Hayley: okay
                          
(School Bus honk)
                          
Hayley: that's the school bus
Nick: don't worry I will bring you to school
Hayley: okay
Annie: (comes in) is Hayley coming to school
Nick: yeah kiddo but I'm gonna bring her instead
Annie: okay, feel better Hayley
Hayley: (smiles weakly) thanks
Nick: you sure you don't want to come with us
Annie: um... no thank you. I have someone waiting for me on the bus
Nick: like who?
Annie: uh... nobody bye! (runs out)
Nick: (looks suspicious and look at Hayley) you know what's that about
Hayley: (shrugs shoulder) I dunno but I can find out for you from my friends
Nick: I dunno because Annie gave us rules about spying on her
Hayley: she didn't say you couldn't spy on her through me
Nick: that's true, alright give me every detail when you come home from school
Hayley: you got it
                          
At Recess.
Hayley was playing tag with her friends when someone at recess tripped her.
                          
???: hey look it's clumsy Hayley
                          
They laugh at her and Hayley tears spilled her eyes and the person said to her.
                          
???: aww is little baby gonna cry, diabetic freak
Txunamy: (comes over with Coco and Piper) leave her alone guys
???: oh look more 3rd graders 
Coco: why don't you go pick on someone your own side Drake?
Drake: because 3rd graders are more fun
Piper: oh than is that why you get left back in 3rd 2 times 
Drake: (glares at her) shut it Piper, you three owe me lunch money anyways
                          
The girls sigh and Coco, Piper, Txunamy hands there lunch money and Drake said to Hayley when he didn't receive hers.
                          
Drake: I'm waiting
Hayley: um... I don't have my money
Drake: say that again rich girl
Hayley: (gulps) I'm not allowed to eat cafe food anymore 
Txunamy: here you can have this
Drake: forget it I rather have her lunch
Hayley: you can't I need that
Drake: I don't care diabetic freak
                          
Hayley quickly took out her lunch bag and hand it to Drake and he grabbed it from her hand and said.
                          
Drake: pleasure doing business with you ladies (walls away from his friends)
Txunamy: ugh I'm so tired of this, this is going on way to long
Piper: agree my family are starting to get suspicious of my eating habits at home 
Hayley: Nick gonna kill me for not eating my lunch
Txunamy: can't we just tell the teacher
Coco: we can't, you heard what he said the other day. (micks his voice) You tell, I beat you up
Piper: that fact that he hit girls makes me sick
Hayley: I have to eat something guys
Piper: come on will go tell our teacher
Coco: Piper...
Piper: this is serious Coco! If we don't tell them soon something could happen to Hayley. It's not good for her health right now. I mean before we could get away with it easy but now we can't 
Hayley: I'm sorry my condition is for you're blame
Piper: oh Hayley that's not what I mean. I'm just worried about you, we all are
Hayley: I know everyone worries
Coco: okay fine, will report the teacher what's been going on
                          
So the girls head into the building together and told the teacher what happened, the teacher reported it to the principle. The principle told them he will deal with this and call the boy in and his parents. Hayley teacher ask if she would like anything to eat before pumping her insulin and she agree.
                          
Hayley ate some food by the time recess was over and the teacher spoke to the class about bullying going on in school and was proud of the four girls for coming to her when it happened.
                          
After school was over Nick came to pick her up and Hayley was surprised and said.
                          
Hayley: Nick, what are you doing here?
Nick: you're principal called home and told us someone been bullying you in school
Hayley: oh...
Nick: he told us, they took your lunch, did you eat anything after you took your insulin?
Hayley: yes Nick my teacher gave me some snack, I was feeling low today
Nick: good 
                          
Nick thank the teacher for looking after Hayley today and her friends as well before leaving the school with Hayley.
