From beneath her delicately closed eyelids, Elena was overcome by a surge of bright white light. In a panic, thinking she had died, Elena's eyes snapped open. She was still on the floor of the concert hall, so she can't be dead, right?
Elena panicked again. What if she was dead? Elena bolted upright and steadied herself on the edge of a chair as an overwhelming sense of nausea and dizziness threatened to send her toppling back down. Elena remembered what Klaus had said and began scanning the room for a racially ambiguous looking God, or a man with a massive white beard but only saw the umbrella academy on the stage with an unconscious Vanya.
They did it. They saved the world. Elena slumped against the chair and sat up, her head just able to see above the row of chairs. Diego caught her eye and smiled. He began walking towards her but was stopped by Five who pointed out of the window in the ceiling. Elena tried to look up to see what everyone was staring at but moving her head that much threatened to send her swooning to the floor again.
Upon scanning the others' horrified facial expressions Elena knew she had to join them. Diego looked at her, his eyes softening in regret. Elena inhaled deeply, grimacing as she steadied herself on the chairs as she hauled herself to her feet. She felt faint but she knew she had to move.
For some reason everyone was standing in a circle and holding hands like they were attending a seance. Wait- can Klaus do that? Did they kill Vanya?
"Diego!" Elena called out, his head turned to look at her. Elena saw Five pull on his arm and stare at him. She saw his lips move but couldn't quite make out what he was saying.
Diego looked at Five, his eyes filled with despair.
"I can't leave her!" Diego protested as he tried to tear his hand away from Five but for a 13 year old boy, he had a surprisingly strong grip.
"If we do this, time travel and stop the apocalypse, you won't have to. She'll be fine!" Five reasoned.
Diego turned to look back at Elena who was staggering forward, using the rows of chairs to support her. She was halfway down the aisle now. She looked terrified.
Elena's breathing increased as she watched Five's hands glow blue. Oh God, he was going to teleport! Elena hurried forward, almost stumbling to the floor in her hurry. To her surprise, everyone else started to glow blue as well. No, they were all going to leave her behind.
"Diego!" She called out again and stared at straight at him. Her eyes widened in fear. She'd never make it. "No!" She called out desperately as they all glowed in an eerie blue light. Elena had to shield her eyes from the bright light that made her head dizzy again. Elena stumbled to the floor. Breathing faster and faster and faster. They were going to leave her behind.
"No! Diego!" Elena called out, desperately trying to make any of them hear her. She didn't dare lower her arm from her eyes just in case the light made her faint. She had to stay conscious if she wanted to live. "Don't leave." She said quietly as her energy drained.
Without any warning, the bright blue light stopped. Elena lowered her arm and started at the empty stage. She gasped as her chest tightened. She couldn't breath. Elena tried to stand but her vision went blurry and she fell back to the ground.
Elena slumped to the ground, defeated and focused on her breathing. She needed to heal herself before she could work out what had happened. There would be an explanation and she would be able to find them again. She had to.
Inhala, exhala. She repeated and steadied her breathing. She shut her eyes to focus on fixing herself.
Elena didn't notice the wall of fire that was sweeping across the world. She didn't even notice the crackling of fire as the concert hall went up in flames. She couldn't comprehend what had happened. One minute she was healing and it was working. The next minute her flesh was being burned quicker than her body could heal itself.
Even she didn't stand a chance.
