On The Run
"Good evening, ma", Greeting was the first thing that came to my mind as I saw Grandma sitting on the only armchair in the living room."I don't want to ever see you near my granddaughter again, stay as far as possible from her else you'll end up in jail", She slapped Loveboy and grabbed my hand.
This time, I couldn't resist her. I followed her meekly like a sheep being led to the slaughterhouse. She didn't even wait for Aunt Simi to finish her night bath and say goodbye to us. Besides, a taxi was already waiting for us outside the apartment.
I didn't sleep a wink throughout the night. My eyes were wide open, watching the night transform into the day, and my heart was trapped with Loveboy. I wanted to give him a last look badly at Aunt Simi's house but I couldn't. I wasn't as strong as I thought. The possibility of him ignoring me forever because of what Grandma also scared me. The possibility of not being able to enjoy the fame and riches he promised anymore made me moody.
As early as 5 am, I entered my bathroom and invested more than an hour in skincare. Since I planned on apologizing to Loveboy for what happened in school, I also knocked on Bola's door to beg for a makeup kit that would make me look irresistible. I refused to ask Bola to help me apply it to avoid insults that will kill my morale, even though she asked if I needed help. I preferred using my phone to watch data-exhausting makeup practicals on YouTube in the kitchen when others were getting ready for school.
Unfortunately, Grandma stopped me from attending Marie's high with the rest. As Uncle Bayo drove out of the compound after giving me an indifferent look, the same taxi driver that brought us home the previous day appeared to give us a ride to a bus terminal. It was indeed grand and stylish. There were benches for passengers to sit while waiting for their buses, boards indicating the time when buses take off, and ATMs for passengers short on cash. Would have taken some shots if I had my phone with me but then, I'm not in the best of mood. The thought of not being able to see Loveboy again ripped my gentle soul apart. It made me feel like the most unlucky person in the world.
"Grandma, I need to use the toilet", I finally devised a means of escaping.
"Hey, do you know where it is?" She couldn't run after me too because she was suffering from Arthritis.
After satisfying nature's call, I applied some hand sanitizers on my sweaty hands and started thinking of the next step to take since I didn't have a dime on me. Just then, I saw a lady's purse fall from her bag unknowingly and helped her pick it up. Funnily enough, I wasn't even tempted to steal from her even though I needed money badly.
Sorry to disappoint you but she didn't give me tons of new one thousand naira notes as a reward for helping her or promise me a ride to wherever it was I wanted to go. She only turned out to be one of my former classmates.
"Jokotola Odunsi!" I was surprised that I could still remember her name.
Jokotola was the kind of student who skipped school for two weeks because she could not afford a new uniform in her junior final year and derived joy in lying to everyone about her social status. She claimed to have traveled to the united states without being able to provide her international passport or VISA. The luxurious apartment her father owned turned out to be a single room in a bungalow built by an external body.
