A few more months later, and Colton was stuck.

Not about Casey.

He was still grieving but he was much better than he first was. Sammy and Mira helped a lot, especially the latter.

Every time he thought of her, a childlike grin would grace his face.

"If you like her so much then why don't you just ask her out?"

Sammy wiped his mouth with a napkin, chucking it onto the floor. Colton narrowed his eyes at him before rubbing his forehead.

"It's not that eas—"

"I get you, man. After Avery and your failed marriage and even after Casey, you're not into the dating scene. I totally get you."

Colton shot him a glare. "Shut up."

"What? I'm just saying."

"Well, don't. It's not like you're doing me a bloody favour," he snapped, irritation flooding through him.

Sammy rubbed the back of his neck, sheepishly. Guilt took over his features as his frown deepened.

"Sorry, Cols. I know it's a sensitive subject but I just want you to move on."

Colton shook his head. "Yeah, I know. I know you mean well, Sammy. Sorry for lashing out at you."

"It's fine. I'm used to it -- you used to be like this 24/7 back in high school."

"Har-har, funny," Colton deadpanned.

"What, I'm being serious!"

Colton smirked. "Yeah, I know. Don't know how you dealt with me, to be honest."

"Trust me, me neither. I've wanted to drop your ass plenty of times."

He grabbed a cold slice of pizza and chucked it at Sammy's face, his lips tilted up into a grin. Though, on the inside, he was far from happy.

He was confused and not even in the slightest mood to eat anything.

All he could think about was Mira.

A few seconds later, Colton muttered, "It's so strange."

Sammy stopped chewing on the pizza Colton had chucked and raised both his eyebrows.

"What is?"

"In high school, I had no interest in her whatsoever," he mumbled absentmindedly. "I mean sure, I used to stare at her, a lot but out of curiosity. I felt bad for her and she was different but I didn't really care about her much, you know? Now, it's like I want to know everything about her. I wanna be near her all the damn time and I want to be there for her."

Sammy shrugged in response. "What you're telling me sounds like a pretty normal thing to go through when you're in love? When you're young, you only care about the short term stuff. You know, like how many people you can hook up with and the experience. Plus you were dealing with your own shit.
Now you've got so much more experience with life. You know what you're looking for in a partner and if you love them then you're willing to look over...well anything. Which is one of the reasons I was so in love with Casey. I didn't care if she was a little...you know. I loved her, and that was all that mattered."

Colton nodded softly, quietly taking in and holding onto every word that his sudden wise friend had told him.

Though he was more focused on the first part of his rant.

He didn't know how to describe the feelings he felt when he would see her. It wasn't like how he had felt with Avery, where everything was rushed and solely focused on just passion.

It was different.

It was warm and affectionate and it felt right.

Suddenly, all his weird ass actions from ten years ago made sense as if the final piece of the puzzle had just been put.

And Sammy had taken that word right out of his mouth.

He was in love.
