Chapter 129: Spencer's POV

Hanna finally let go of us when I started gagging, but she was still smiling a lot.

"Toby, why didn't you tell me you were going to propose? We could have helped make it more romantic!" she teased Toby.

"That's because we're not freaking engaged!" I interrupted.

"Wait, what?" Hanna said and took my hand again. "What's with this engagement ring?"

"It was my mom's," Toby explained. "I just gave it to her, you know, so five years down the road, I don't need to propose."

Toby was thinking about our future that far down the road? I didn't know if this was sweet or just plain creepy.

"Aw, that's cute," Hanna said. "Anyway, Spence, do you want to come over? We all miss you."

I looked at Toby and he smiled. "Go have fun!"

"Thanks," I said and gave him a quick kiss.

"I'm not engaged!" I yelled as Hanna and I walked into Emily's house. Emily and Aria sat on the couch, looking at me like I was crazy.

"Long story," Hanna said.

"I'm guessing it's the huge ass ring on your finger," Aria said. "Looks nice. And expensive."

"Toby gave it to me as a gift," I said. "Nothing much."

"So he doesn't have to buy her a ring five years down the road," Hanna said and Emily and Aria laughed.

"Can we just not talk about this now?" I asked, feeling awkward.

"Come on, Spencer, it's cute!" Hanna said.

"Well, it's a little weird," I admitted. "Did you know he was going to propose to me earlier, but I told him it was stupid?"

"You're kidding," Emily said.

"No, I'm not. And he's already like pressuring me about my college and where I want to go!" I said.

"Well, he's just thinking about your future," Aria remarked. "No need to worry. Overly clingy is better than nothing at all."

"Look, Aria, I just have so much other stuff to worry about, like freaking A, for instance. I don't have time to think about what's going to happen in five years, or even, next summer!"

"Well, my take is, to not mention it to Toby now. You guys have already been through so much and none of us want to see another breakup," Emily said.

"Yeah, I won't. I'll just appreciate this and show it off to people," I joked and the girls laughed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Where were you?" Mom said as soon as I stepped into my house. She was at the door, as if she had been waiting for me to come home all day. I kept the door open in case I needed to make a fast getaway.

"I was with the girls," I said. "I even left you a note about Aria's leg."

"I've been trying to call you to check how you guys were doing, but you never picked up."

"I'm sorry, Mom. Phone died," I said and walked past her, but she stopped me.

"Spencer Hastings! Turn around and show me your hand!"

Shit.

I turned around and showed her my right hand.

"Other hand," she said sternly and I pulled my left hand out of my pocket and showed it to her.

Mom took the ring off my hand and threw it out the window, her eyes filled with rage.
