Riley's POV
I touch my lips as I watch James walk back into Studio A. It hasn't even been a day, and I never realized how much I missed the feel of his lips pressed against mine. I try to forget about it and walk back to the studio, where Kate was making an announcement.
"Alright dancers!" She calls out. "For those who don't know, I have asked Riley and James to do a duet each with Charlie and Beth from B Troupe for an upcoming competition."
Everyone claps and smiles, but I notice James cross his arms and jaw tighten at the sound of Charlie's name. Kate continues.
"I have decided that I will also get a male and female soloist and two trios as well to go to the competition, for kind of a warmup for nationals, to get used to performing on stage again. So, decide what you want to do, and work on a routine to audition with. James and Riley, you can go meet with Charlie and Beth and work on your routines."
Me and James leave the room to go find our duet partners.
"So..." He says.
"What?" I inquire. He shrugs.
"Nothing, just trying to make conversation."
"James, it doesn't have to be awkward between us-"
"Your the one who made it awkward with this stupid break!"
"Well maybe I needed a break away from you!"
"And why is that?!"
"Because you scared me." I say quietly. James stops walking.
"What do you mean?" He asks, his voice lowered.
"When you hit me James. It scared me. Your the last person I expected to hurt me like that." I sniffle.
"God Riles, I'm so sorry and I didn't mean it. You know that." He says quietly, putting his hands on my shoulders. I flinch him away.
"I need to go find Charlie." I say and scurry away.
