Melissa's POV

School starts up again in a week. Everyone was settled into their new rooms and we were not too far away from the court date to adopt Matt. He would definitely be in with us by Christmas at the latest. Henry had gone to another music camp and wouldn't be back again for another few weeks. Mitch and Kirstie would be at the pre-school where their brothers went to school. Hopefully they had the same teacher that Scott had. It would make things easier. I had already been told that the twins would at least be in the same class. That was a relief.

I woke up at 6:30am on Tuesday to silence, but I could tell that something was wrong or something was going to happen. I lay in bed for a moment and just listened. All of a sudden there was a small thud followed by a high pitched cry. I jumped out of bed and went straight to Kirstie's room, knowing it was her cry. I found her on the floor next to her bed with Mitch holding her hand. She had tears running down her face and she was breathing very fast. Her eyes weren't focused on anything and she had quite a high fever.

"Mitchy, can you go and get the thermometer from the shelf for me please?" I asked gently. I didn't want to scare him. Her temperature was sky high. My mind flashed back to almost a year ago, when Kirstie got meningitis. This couldn't be something to do with that could it? Her symptoms were too similar. I really didn't know enough about any complications associated with it. I trusted my gut instinct so I called Faith (Henry's Mum) and asked if she could watch the kids. I needed to get Kirstie to the hospital. Just in case. Faith and Thomas would be over within 10 minutes.

Just as I was about to pick Kirstie up to take her to the hospital, her whole body started to jerk around. She was seizing up. There was nothing around that could hurt her so just watched her closely. Then she started to cough a bit. She brought up quite bit of mucus and gross stuff. At this point I was getting very scared, but Mitch was still with me so he couldn't know that. Thankfully Faith and Thomas walked in at that moment.

"Call an ambulance." I said, completely worried for Kirstie's safety.

The ambulance arrived in minutes and the siren had woken the rest of the kids up. All four boys were stood in the hall watching their sister with wide eyes. Thomas answered the door and directed the ambulance crew up to us.

"Hello, I'm Harry. What's your daughter's name?"

"I'm Melissa. Her name is Kirstie." He nodded and knelt next to her head. Her shaking had slowed a little, bit she was still coughing and bringing up quite a bit of yuck.

"How old is she?" Harry asked.

"Three."

"Hi Kirstie. My name is Harry. Squeeze my hand if you can hear me at all." He said taking her hand. It took longer than normal, but she did gently squeeze his hand. "Okay, good job. We're going to take you to the hospital, okay? First we're going to give you some medicine to help you feel better." She gave a very small nod. The other crew member handed a small needle over and he gave her an injection in her arm. She made a noise of discomfort, but calmed down straight afterwards. Once she was calm, Harry gently scooped her up and carried her down to the ambulance. I followed after them like a puppy.

She was whisked off to the emergency room as soon as we arrived. She had fallen asleep on the way, but they were mainly worried with how high her temperature was. Whilst they focused on cooling her down, I called Henry and told him what was going on. He wanted to drop everything and be with her, but somehow I convinced him not to. I would keep him updated and let him know if he really needed to be here.
