Chapter Forty-Five

Megan

"I hope you're not thinking for one second that I'm forgetting your little tryst with Harris."

Slight indignation smears my husband's tone. Not telling him Bryan and I's meet-up place may be a bad decision. But I don't let his statement get to me. Knowing that I was alone on that battlefield gave me the strength I needed to unsheathe my sword.

And that was very important for me.

I'm all for this man saving me with all the resources he has at his disposal. That was what he promised me at the beginning. One of the tempting perks that enticed me to agree to this marriage. But if I let him resolve things for me without my knowledge, how is our arrangement different from the life I left behind?

Whatever concerns me should involve me.

In that case, he didn't even ask me what I wanted.

I wasn't unfair for not letting him come to my rescue. I was pulling at the reigns that should have been mine in the first place. If I keep telling this to myself, will it make the unnecessary guilt less suffocating?

I sink deeper into his chest as I feel my heart growing distant. "Funny. I haven't thought about it since the moment you crawled over me... and that was like hours ago."

The hand on my behind squeezes. "Smart-ass."

He cups my chin, tilting my head up to meet his gaze. His eyes are glaring, but his voice tells me another story. "What happened?" he asks softly.

I look down at his chest, drawing little circles as I allow myself to sulk some more. "Why did you do that?"

"I told you I'll take care of him."

"You should've told me," I whisper, my tone accusing. "What was that little stunt he's talking about?"

"He saw it coming," he says, not missing a beat. "He tried to buy their sister company back with a 10% increase from the amount I bought it. In any other case, I would agree. Selling a company with little to no effort from our workforce was a sweet deal. But pettiness seems to be a side of me that you can also bring out."

A small laugh erupts from my throat. "What did you do?"

"I broke it piece by piece and sold the assets separately. That sister company was a big one with a long outstanding history. They were expecting me to continue that legacy by selling them to a larger entity." He snorts. "But since Bryan pissed me off, I let that legacy go down the drain. A lawsuit was in order, but the business was mine before the news of our marriage even reached him."

I'm speechless. He never once hinted about his interest in Bryan, yet he was doing all of these efforts behind the scenes.

"I'm sorry for keeping it from you. But I did promise that I'll help you forget about him." He groans when I swat his stomach. "Was it effective?"

"Well yes, I was happy when I realized it a few weeks ago. But this is different. You had a literal person monitoring my personal email. You should've talked to me about it," I explain, the ice in my heart beginning to thaw. "I don't like that, Wade. It makes me question what else you're controlling without me knowing."

His features soften. "I hear you, baby. I doubted my actions when I found out why you left. For the record, that was the only account I had someone oversee."

"Are you hiding anything else from me?"

"No, nothing else. Do you?"

I shake my head. "Besides our little meet-up place, I never hid anything from you. You literally know everything about me."
