I let him go on his merry way, and looked around for table five. I found it toward the front. There were eight chairs, five people were already there. All white, go figure. Three women and two men. They all seemed to be 50 and older. I greeted them, and sat down in my seat looking around for Nate.

I saw him talking to someone at another table, he peeped me and walked over.

“The woman of the hour.” He smiled with his hands in pockets. “Everyone this is Amber Riley. She’s one of the speakers tonight.”

They all gave those smiles, you know the quick ones to be polite. Nate introduced all of them. It was a mix between doctors, lawyers, businessmen, and one was just a stay at home mom to her judge husband.

There were two empty chairs on both sides of me. Nate sat in one. “So you ready?” He put his arm on the back of my chair and grinned at me.

“I’m nervous.”

“Why do you always say that, then kill it? Amber stop.” He took a sip of water from the glass in front of him.

“I’m glad you have more confidence in me than I do.”

“You look absolutely stunning.” He was referencing my long blue one shoulder gown.

“Thank you.” I took a sip of my water. “You look nice for an almost dead man.” I joked.

“Very funny.” He rolled his eyes.

“I’m glad to see you’re doing better though.”

“I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you, so thank you. I thought your boyfriend was coming?”

“He’s here. Get up and remove your hand from around my woman.” August stood behind Nate, fixing his black suit.

Nate turned around and removed his hand. “It’s a chair on the other side man.”

“I want this one.”

Nate looked at me. “Well guess that’s my cue.”

He got up.

“You don’t have to be rude I was just--.”

“Get out my fucking face.” August pushed him out the way and sat down.

People at the table started looking at us. I covered my face in shame.

“I was supposed to sit here, but I’ll find another table.”

“Yeah you do that.” August said pulling up his chair.
