They had their first flying lesson with Madam Hooch the next day. First years were not allowed to bring their own brooms, so there were eight school brooms on the ground.
Madam Hooch gave her instructions. "Stand beside your broom and say 'UP'. Then mount them. No one will start flying—only mount."
James had his broom in his hand at once, and mounted it. The entire class stared at him in wonder, and he couldn't resist showing off a little.
He took off and rapidly rose into the sky.
"POTTER, COME DOWN AT ONCE!" yelled Madam Hooch. James pretended not to hear and zoomed around the field once, and while descending flew dangerously past Lily's head, forcing her to duck. Then he landed smoothly.
Madam Hooch was angry but couldn't help being impressed as well. "It's a mercy that you didn't break your neck. The rest of you, continue."
By the end of the lesson, only Sirius and Marlene had managed to rise a few feet above the ground. Most of the others had at least got the broom to rise, but Lily hadn't.
"Hey, Evans!" called James, as they were going back.
Lily totally ignored him and strode off.
James looked mystified.
"To be fair, you can't blame her," said Sirius, grinning.
