I Was Scared
Life is like a tower. Not just a steeping skyscraper, however. Life is a tower of piled up sedimentary rock. When it comes crumbling down, it can become very difficult to put back together. Your tower however, was much smaller than, say, Elijah Kamski's. He had so many people to help him put his life back together and relied on everyone around him to help him do so. He had so much to look forward to within the spaces of delicate rock.
(Flashback)
"What is this?" You asked, the letter that Elijah was previously holding now lying flat in your hands.
"Look at it," He said, his facial muscles not moving a single inch.
You looked down at said letter and immediately noticed the sender's label stamped on the front. The United States Navy. You took a slow breath inwards and looked up at Elijah, a look of solemn sincerity glazed over his eyes. You paled, expecting the worst.
You looked back at the crisp envelope, it's contents obviously undisturbed by anyone-- not even Elijah.
"I waited for you to open it. I'm just as nervous as you are," He said, his voice barely above a whisper. The Elijah Kamski had let his fortress' walls down. It was just his inner core being exposed, his emotions lied out on the ground in front of his feet.
You hesitantly slipped a finger underneath the lip of the envelope and slit the paper open with your nail, every cut you made making you sweat more and more. It opened with a pop, and the envelope had been opened. It's contents were ready for you indulge in-- pick apart their every word. You wanted to do so, but at the same time you would rather leave the letter here and never come back to it.
You pulled the white paper out with a shaky hand, each breath you took becoming shorter than the last. You couldn't hyperventilate now, for you hadn't even opened the letter yet. Yet when you did, you regretted it.
You didn't even need to read the whole letter. The first few words were all you needed, and the rest was probably just false condolences that you didn't need hearing of. You were fine as you were.
You were so lost in your sea of emotions that you didn't realize that you were being embraced by Elijah, his tall figure encasing yours with the utmost warmth. You felt his chest seizing against your own-- a sure sign that he was lost at sea just as you were. His walls had been completely abandoned to the air of the lake, now.
(Flashback End)
Your tower had completely crumbled in a matter of just a few words. No more, no less. You didn't even know if you wanted anyone to come and comfort you. You just wanted to be left alone.
No Connor, no Elijah, no Hank, no...
You burst out in silent tears for what seemed like the 20th time that day. You didn't actually know. You stopped counting after the fifth time.
And then there was a knock at your door; a horrid, horrid knock. One that violated your sinuses and raped your brain for an answer to your current state of mind. You wanted to throw your TV at the door, but you decided not to for a plentiful number of reasons.
Whoever was there knocked again, and this time you got up and unleashed your sorry state to the poor soul that stood outside your apartment door. Your breath hitched in your throat.
Connor... you had never seen him so distraught. Dry tears stained his once-warm cheeks, his hair now falling in a disheveled heap on his head rather than in the typical neat hairstyle that he wore. You probably looked just as bad as he did, though.
