CHAPTER 7- YOUR EYES SAY IT ALL
JASMINE
A lot of things has happened over the last few months. Amy, Jasper and I has become a whole lot closer, Timothy got married to his sweetheart, and Mom gave birth to a lovely girl in December. I was and still am really excited, as I’ve always wanted a younger sister. She looks just like Rob. Brown eyes and gold hair. Weird right, I know, but our maternal great grand mum was an Asian. Her trait never showed till Rob, and now in Jacinth. Mum gave me the privilege to name her although Jasper wanted to name her Jackie and still calls her that. She gets dedicated next month. Also, the Cowbellpedia was held last month. I couldn’t participate as I broke my legs while walking down the stairs and was hospitalized. (Don’t bother asking how that happened).
Well, back to present, it’s a week to Valentine, and a particular idiot, doesn’t have a date to the school’s valentine dance. We sat down at the cafeteria in school talking. Amy was absent because she said she had to help Bailey with a math assignment due first period after lunch.
“You have to ask her before someone else does.”
“I know, I’m just scared to.”
I laughed so loud the whole room turned to look at me. I quietened my laugh before turning to him.
“The great Jasper Okechukwu scared, I should record this moment and keep it forever.”
“Don’t tease me” he warned.
“You’re hilarious. Look,” I said getting serious. “Normally, girls like to get asked months before the dance, so I’m surprised Amy doesn’t have a date. It must mean she’s waiting for you to ask her, so man up and do it before Derrick does…”
“Wait Derrick plans to as her out?”
“You must be hallucinating or living in an alternate universe if you think all the guys are gonna wait for you or reserve her for you.” He looked like he was going to cry.
“It is Amy bro, not some stranger, just ask her, if she rejects you then great.”
“You’re saying that like it’s a piece of cake. Besides, do you even have a date?”
“Of course, I’m going with Victor. He’s not much, but I hear he looks amazing in a tux.” Surprise played across his face as I broke out into a soft laugh quickly finishing my bagel and soda.
“Girlfriend alert, I’ll leave you two to discuss.” I said as I stood up from the table. “Lover boy.” I whispered as he hit my back and bit back a curse.
“Hey pretty.” I said as I walked away, while Amy looked at me like I was crazy.

JASPER
“Hey Amy”
“Hey sugar”
“How’s your day going?’
“Great.” I took a sip of my drink. “Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
“Well, there’s this friend of mine who needs to ask a particular girl out on valentine and doesn’t know how to?”
“Really?” she asked with a knowing smile as I glared at her
“Don’t look at me like that, I’m really not the one” I sulked as she laughed.
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You’re eyes say it all.”
“That’s your business. Well, to answer your question, I think he should ask her out, she might say yes.”
“I’ll tell him.”
“What ‘bout you, aren’t you asking any girl to the dance?”
“I’m still working up the courage.” I said as we stood up from the table.
“You should before she gets asked by another.”
“Funny, same thing Jas said to me.”
“Then, you should take our advice.”
“Wise decision. I may just take you guys up on it.”
“See you later Sugar”
“You know we’re both in the same class right.”
“I do.”
“And stop calling me that.”
“Never.”
“You’re crazy.”
“What do I say? Your crazy sis rubbed off on me.”
“Don’t let her hear you say that.”
“I already did.” Jasmine says appearing out of nowhere.
********** “Where in heaven’s name are you taking me Jay?” Amy asked. We were walking down the beach in town with her eyes blindfolded.
“One more step. Here” I said loosening her blindfold as she sucked in a breath.
“It’s beautiful.” She said turning to me. We’d rode on my bike to the beach. Jasmine and I usually did this back home, a thing Rob loved to do. We’d go to the beach or a lonely road and watch the sunset. We sat on a mat as we watched the sunset, the quiet and serene environment, coupled with the evening breeze made it beautiful, it never got old. I removed my eyes from the view and watched Amy, she looked extremely beautiful. Being with Amy was easy. I didn’t have to pretend or try too hard, I could just be me. I really liked her.
“Hey Amy” I called as she begun to play at the edge of the ocean.
“Yeah sugar”
“Can you stop calling me that?”
“No, I tend to continuously forget your name. I mean, is it Joseph, Joshua or Jude?”
“It’s Jasper.”
“I’ll try to remember that.”
I rolled my eyes and walked over to where she stood.
“Will you be my date to the dance?”
“What?” she asked almost like she didn’t hear me.
“Will you be my date to the dance?” I asked looking at my wet feet and rubbing the back of my head nervously.
“Yes Jasper, I’ll be your date.”
“Will you be my girlfriend too?” I asked in a rush of frenzied emotions. Who was in control of my mouth she let out a low laugh as her face grew serious.
“I like you Jasper, I really do…”
“This isn’t going to be good. Don’t bother answering, let’s just go.”
“No, let me finish.”
“I already know you’re gonna reject me, don’t embarrass me more.”
“Look Jasper, I really like you, like 100% like you, but the thing is I’m not ready for a relationship.” I turned away to leave feeling like an idiot.
“Look Amy, please let’s just go. I don’t even know why I asked, I’m sorry.”
“Jasper.” She called as I started to walk away.
“Look, it’s me okay, not you. A relationship like what you’re asking for comes with a level of mental stress that I’m not ready for. I like you, gosh, that’s why I waited this long for you to ask me, but I can’t take on this level of stress and I’m sorry.” She said as I nodded. I guess it made sense. I really liked her, but a new level of our friendship will come with more responsibility.
“Maybe in the future?” I asked as she smiled
“Yeah.” She said as she walked and gave me a light kiss on my lips. “Let’s go sugar”
“So… bout your friend?” she asked as they rode back on their bikes.
“Yeah?”
‘Has he asked that girl out?”
“I’ll have to ask him.”
“Let me know his reply.”
