"Tori!" I yelled while banging on my baby mom's door. It's my weekend to get my daughter, Jade, but my baby mom is making that difficult. Like always. Females always complain how fathers don't want to be in their kid's life. Yet here I am, busting my ass, and the bitch can't even answer the door. I had the urge to kick it down but I don't have time for the argument.
"Fuck this shit."
I turned the knob and pushed the door open. I wrinkled my nose in disgust as soon as I walked in. Food was all over the coffee table and it smelled like stale ass. When I first met Tori, she was a stallion with a fat ass. She was your typical snow bunny but she was down for whatever. She was cool and I just wanted one night. That one night got me stuck with her ass for eighteen years.
I shook my head and proceeded in to look for my kid. I know she misses me. I stepped on something and when I looked down and seen a crack pipe, my cool went completely out of the window.
"Tori, where the fuck you at?"
"Dice... hey baby."
Tori came out the room with a short robe on and her hair was everywhere. I could've commented on why the fuck she was looking the way she did and have the door unlocked for anybody to get in here, but my mind was too busy focused on the pipe I stepped on.
"Yo what I told you about this crack shit? And why you got it just out like that?"
"It's alright, Jade know better."
"She's fuckin' five. What can she-"
I stopped mid-sentence as I watched some nigga come out the room, no shirt on, and his pants undone. I couldn't figure out for the love of God why the hell she was doing shit like she doesn't have a brain. But I'll help her find her sense if she can't find it.
He kissed Tori's cheek and tried to undo her robe. Niggas these days have no respect.
"Yo" I chuckled. "Where the fuck is my daughter?"
"Tori, who is this clown?"
"Na nigga who the fuck is you? Matter fact, don't answer that 'cause I don't give a fuck."
I shook my head and walked towards my daughter's room. The guy cut me off and stood in my way all swole like he was about to hit some shit.
"Hol' up, you ain't finna just be walkin' up in here."
"I'll do whatever I muh fuckin' please. You don't know me nigga so get the fuck out my face."
I tried to continue walking and he pushed me back. I hauled and punched him in the face, making him fall to the ground.
"I don't have time for this."
I pulled out my gun and cocked it.
"You don't want these problems with me b. Get the fuck on while you can."
He swiftly got up and ran out the door.
"You ain't finna be-"
"Shut the fuck up Tori. Fuckin' and doin' this dumb shit while my daughter here? You've clearly lost your damn mind."
I stood toe to toe with her and she looked away scared. I never hit a woman, and I never will. But Tori makes me wanna body slam the fuck out of her half the time. It's like she keeps pushing me and pushing me. She knows the only thing that'll make me snap is my money and my seed. And by coming in here wasting time beating her Wednesday night dick's ass, she's clearly fucking with both.
"I'm taking Jade." I said brushing past her. I opened jade's room door and her smile when she saw me thawed the extra ice that just formed on my heart.
"Daddy!"
Jade ran to me and I picked her up and kissed her forehead.
"Hey stink. You got your stuff?"
"You not takin' my kid Dice."
I put Jade down, and tried my best to get myself together. It's bad enough I curse around Jade, I don't wanna do this in front of her too. She grabbed her suitcase and went towards the door. Tori stopped her in her tracks and snatched it away from her.
"Don't snatch nothin' away from my daughter!"
"I said you're not takin' her!"
"Watch me! And if you don't like it, take my black ass to court! I'll love to tell them crackas' all this shit you been doin' while my daughter been in here."
I looked at her, wanting her to say something. When she didn't I moved her out of my way and continued my stride out of this garbage disposal. Jade was right behind me. She seemed as if she been ready to leave herself.
"We goin' to see Granny Maxie?"
"Yes stink, we goin' to see Granny."

"Dyshawn, come here!"
I put the remote down and walked to my mother's room. She put out a cigarette and motioned for me to sit down. For her to be white, she had every black bone in her body. Growing up, she made sure I knew what it was to struggle. Shit I remember when it was a time we had to borrow soap just to wash our asses. So once I got into this game, I made sure I made a way that we would never have to go through that again. Once Jade came in the picture, I made sure she never would know how it even felt. It would've been nice to have my father around though. Somebody took it upon themselves to take his life away. For what reason, I don't know but I don't need to know.
Her coughing interrupted my thoughts.
"You iight ma?" I asked her.
"I'm fine, but what's not fine is you bringin' that girl here every weekend."
"Ma, you should've seen how Tori-"
"Before you talk about her, think about you. Leavin' her here while you out on them corners. You just as bad as her. This ain't my child, she's yours."
"I know what I'm doin' ma."
"Sure you do. Out here riskin' ya life, just like ya daddy. And you gonna die just like ya daddy."
"I'm not tryna hear this ma."
"Well you gon' hear it!"
"But you don't complain when you buyin' furs and shit with the money I make on them corners."
"Boy I don't need that shit! Momma always good."
I rolled my eyes.
"You done ma?"
Before she could say anything, I got up and walked out her room. I love my mom, but these lectures getting old. I'm doing what I know, and that's hustling. It's fast. It's easy. And I love it. Didn't nobody have to teach me how to grind, that shit was in my blood. At the end of the day all I know is I have to provide for me and mine and I plan on doing any and everything to do so. Doesn't stop my mother from giving me this same old sad story about how somebody gonna take my life. I know the risk I'm taking. But to me, it's worth it.
I leaned on the door frame, watching Jade sleep. I wouldn't dare make the mistake of being with Tori again. She blessed me with Jade though, so I feel like I owe her to make sure nothing happens to her. A part of me wishes I could raise her up in a whole household, like them white folks on t.v. Shit that's probably not gonna happen though. I can't bring these hoes round my seed, and give her the wrong image. I wouldn't have time for nobody anyway. If I'm not with Jade I'm making this money. I just don't see where a woman would fit at.
"Beautiful, isn't she?"
I looked down at my mom, then back at Jade.
"Yeah, she is."
"You think about what you're riskin' when you leave here to run the streets."
(She just doesn't stop.) I know I'm putting a lot at risk. But I can picture Jade walking into one of them fancy ass schools like Harvard or something. I do this all for her. One day I'm gonna get enough to get us the hell out of here. It'll just be me and her. I smiled.
"I got this ma."
