Chapter 18: the red flag

Liv takes a long, exasperated breath beside me. We have made it to Daniels room where he's still laying in the same spot. As if he's the victim.
I look at her and she keeps staring at him in the bed.
"Hey." I brush her cheek with my thumb and that snaps her out of it. She leans into my touch and I can see tears in her eyes.

"I'll be with you the whole time."

I don't want to bring up what happened in the break room just yet. It was definitely unexpected. Once I kissed her, I felt like I couldn't stop. I don't know what would've happened if she hadn't stopped me to be honest.

We head into the room, and a police officer is standing just beside the door, his hands rested by his holster. He definitely looks like he doesn't want to be there. Dr. Altmen stands by Daniel's bed, with an unreadable expression. Not even a flinch.

I bring Liv over to the foot of the bed and stop, letting her recollect herself.

"Will." Dr. Altmen speaks up. "Read the results."

I sigh and lift the clipboard that will soon disappoint almost everyone in the room. Well except for Daniel.

"There was no signs of DNA found in the patient. There was however, some DNA found under the victim's fingertips, and a sign of struggle due to the marks on her stomach and neck."

I feel Liv sink next to me. I should've expected this reaction as soon as Helm brought me the results. I try to put on a fake smile, which is next to impossible with the results in my hand. It was basically burning them at the touch when we walked to Daniels room.

I stop and look at Dr. Altmen who has changed his expression from unreadable to disappointment. But Daniels look says it all. He probably thinks that this means he's off the hook.

Well he's wrong.

Liv nudges me in the side.

"Can you take me closer?"

"Liv.. I don't know if that's such a good-"

"Please?" She holds my arm tightly, her fingernails lightly digging into my skin.

This could either end really badly, or completely fine. But I give in.

I walk Liv over to the side of the bed and she breaks off from me, getting closer to Daniel. Okay this is definitely a danger zone.

She freezes.

A red flag is waving wildly, deep in the pit of my stomach. She leans close to his face. Red flag. Red flag. Red flag.

"I want to make sure you get a chance at the time of your life." She whispers, clenching her teeth. Then she reaches down and tightens his handcuffs so fast that I probably wouldn't have noticed. Daniel grunts in pain and yanks the handcuff that are locked to the handle of the bed. Then Liv limps back over to me.
