Evolution: Chapter 47

Start from the beginning

Hands gripped my arms to heave me up, and Ripper's mouth was by my ear, "Don't focus on it." His body slipped behind mine, holding me still. I didn't even notice as Eric moved, taking the opportunity to fire, "Selene, you need to not focus on it. Pretend its white noise, and push past it."

"I can't! I can't!" It was all I could focus on. The only thing I could hear was the dreadful piercing shrill in the air, "It hurts, it hurts so bad!"

Ripper's words were somehow pushing above the noise, directly into my ear. Demanding that I focus on something else, but what was there!? Nothing inside me, or around me could think of anything else.

"Anger, Selene." Ripper's words were a shouting demand, he shook me roughly, "Focus on your anger!"

I was trying to. Normally I didn't invite it to the forefront of my mind but tonight, I needed it. Every awful thing that had happened to me, I let burn bright in my memory.

Drowned myself in the pain that had been inflicted on me, thought of the people who hurt me the most.

And the pain started to fade.

"Now." I managed to thickly bark, struggling to find my balance, and Ripper held me up, "We have to leave now!"

It was loud enough that everyone through the bond heard it. A sudden loud bang filled the air, a warning noise. Eric had his arm drawn back, a grenade cradled in the palm of his hand, his expression telling us to move.

"Badass." Wayland was suddenly beside us, eyes trained on Eric with a wide grin, "That dude is badass!"

Blood trickle from his ears, and he winced slightly. Eric threw the grenade, and everything went to hell. Seconds is what it took for the ground to suddenly explode beneath us, sending gravel spearing through the air like small bullets.

I swear I heard the pause, before the explosion. We dived for cover when a car on the opposite side suddenly exploded, raining down shards of metal on us.

Filling with the sky with an arching tower of fiery smoke, and my head spun from everything happening around us.

"To the car!" Ripper roared, giving us both a hard shove forward. Making me stumble over my feet as I moved, "Now! Move!"

The distraction was enough to throw everyone off, but mostly the humans. The assassins fumbled through the cover of smoke we managed to weasel our way through, holding hands over our mouths as we did.

Beating furiously from the adrenaline, my heart raced out of control as we raced towards the car. Bullet holes marred its doors, but at least it would drive.

My hand was tight around Rippers, breathing heavy as we rushed through the darkness of the black smokes thick cover.

When Ripper's grip on mine started to pull away, panic started through me, "What are you doing!?" I screamed when he suddenly wretched himself away, his eyes wide. If I didn't know any better, I'd say he was scared, "Stop him!"

Wayland, who'd been moving behind our creator for his protection snatched his hand out. However, Ripper broke into a desperate run, I could hear his heart racing in his chest. Feel the panic rolling off him in waves.

No! The smoke was starting to clear, and a struggled shout made it through the air, one I recognized.

Hayden tried to fight her way out of the two grips holding her hostage, they were dragging her towards the back of a black van, kicking and screaming.

Blood stained her head, pouring from an obvious wound. Depthless black eyes widened when she spotted us, "Bullseyes! Bullseye!" That single word was screamed clear as day, but it wasn't me she was shouting it at, "Daddy, please! Bullseye!"
