Nick
I nervously bounced my knee as I parked up in front of Demi's house. I stared up at the white modern building as I pulled the key from the ignition. It took a while, but I eventually built up the courage to climb from the car and I began up to the front door, my palms sweating as I shoved them into the pockets of my sweater. I rang the doorbell, trying to control the pounding of my heart as I heard the barking of Batman and Cinderella. It wasn't long later that my eyes were burning into Demi's.
"Hi" I couldn't help but to smile at how amazing she looked. She's practically glowing. I swear she has this bright glow around her. It's been so much more prominent since I found out about the pregnancy.
"Hi" my lower region tingled as she briefly chewed down on her lower lip. "You-You're glowing, Dems" my heart fluttered when she glanced down, her cheeks burning a light red.
"Thanks. I actually have something to show you" I stepped into the house as she allowed me in. I fussed Batman and Ella for a moment before I glanced up at Demi as she spoke. "I erm...I kind of have a bump" I couldn't help but to smile, glancing down at her stomach that was covered by her shirt.
"Really?" she nodded, slowly lifting her shirt and she turned to the side so that I could see the tiny little bump.
"It literally appeared overnight."
"Wow" I mumbled, taking a small step towards her, my eyes still locked on her belly. I can't wait to watch it grow.
"Give me your hand" I scrunched my eyebrows together but held my hand out for her to take, allowing her to guide my hand to her stomach. Our eyes locked briefly as she placed my hand onto her stomach. "It's hard" she pressed my fingers down on her stomach so I could feel for myself. "I'm going to start taking weekly photos, I want to make an album that I can show them when they're older" I looked up to meet her gaze.
"Will you send me the photos?" she nodded with a smile. "I might not always be there, but I want to be as involved as possible" I swear I saw a flash of disappointment in Demi's eyes, but I didn't question it as she glanced down at my hand that continued to lightly caress her belly.
-
I kept my gaze down on Demi as she sat on the edge of the bed, chewing on her nail that I'd grown to learn was a habit of hers when she's nervous.
"Dems, you okay?" she pulled her finger from her mouth and looked over at me with a small smile and a subtle nod.
"Yeah, I'm a little nervous that's all" I sent her a small smile as she released a nervous breath.
"Hi Demi" our attention turned to the door as it opened, and Dr James stepped through with a welcoming smile. "How are you feeling?" I gave him a brief smile as I nodded.
"A little nervous."
"There's nothing to be nervous about. You're finally getting to see your baby. And you must be the dad?" his attention turned to me and I nodded, giving his hand a polite shake. "We just need to do the regular checks such as height and weight" I watched Demi grimace slightly at the mention of having to check her weight. "You don't have to look, and I won't tell you if you don't want to know. I'll just mention whether it's a healthy weight" Demi nodded and sent Dr James a simple smile. He grabbed the scales and lowered them onto the floor. I helped Demi to push herself up from the bed. She stepped onto the scales, her eyes locking with mine and my heart ached at the tears that had welled up in her eyes.
"You're okay" I mouthed and sent her a reassuring smile.
"Your weight is perfectly healthy, Demi" she breathed out a sigh of relief before stepping off the scales. All the other mandatory checks were carried out before we finally got to the fun part. "Now for the exciting part of this appointment" Demi and I shared a smile as she slowly lowered herself back onto the bed. I stood beside her, hesitating on whether I should take a hold of her hand or not. I decided against it. "You have a nice little bump going on" Dr James spoke as Demi lifted her shirt, tucking some tissue paper into her jeans.
"It literally appeared overnight" my heart fluttered at the smile that grew on Demi's face.
"That's only going to keep happening" Dr James grabbed the ultrasound machine and pulled it towards the edge of the bed as he perched on the rolling desk chair. "The gel may be a little cold, Demi" I watched intently, my heart slowly beginning to pound against my chest out of nerves. I looked up at Demi as she stared up at the ceiling, chewing down lightly on her bottom lip. Dr James squirted some gel on Demi's stomach before grabbing the wand. I glanced up at Demi when I felt her hand wrap around mine, squeezing it slightly, but her eyes remained on the ultrasound monitor. Dr James pressed a few buttons before turning the machine more so that we could see our baby. "And there's baby" the tears burnt at the back of my eyes as I finally got to see my baby on the screen. I don't know what I was expecting but I didn't expect them to look so much like a baby already.
