"It's wind." Bilbo said. "Of course it is."
Gollum growled. "Very clever, Hobbitses. Very clever."
Bilbo pointed his sword at the advancing Gollum. "Ah-ah-ah. A box without hinges, key or lid. Yet golden treasure inside is hid."
This seemed to have stumped Gollum, who took quite a long time to answer and kept muttering random words from the riddle.
Golden treasure inside is hid? What could that be?
"Well?" Asked Bilbo.
"It's nasty." Gollum hissed, motioning for a bit more time.
"Do you give up?"
"Give us a chance, precious! Give us a chance!" Cried Gollum.
He pounded the ground and grunted and hissed until finally, he opened his watery eyes and screamed, "EGGSES! Eggses! Wet, crunchy little eggses. Yes. Grandmother taught us to suck them, yes."
Bilbo glanced away for a second, and I watched Gollum scurry up a rock and out of sight.
"We have one for you." He hissed, voice echoing through the cavern.
"All things it devours. Birds, beasts, trees, flowers. Gnaws iron, bites steel. Grinds hard stones to meal."
Oh! I knew this one! I had heard it a few years ago passing through a pub.
"Answer us." Gollum demanded.
"Give me a moment, please. I gave you a good long while." Bilbo called, looking for the icky little creature.
Bilbo began whispering to himself, and I became worried. I drew my sword as quietly as I could, ready to spring forward at any moment.
"I don't know this one," Bilbo confessed nervously.
"Is it tasty?" Gollum asked, voice filled with malice. "It it scrumptious? Is it crunchable?"
And he was suddenly there, behind Bilbo with his hands around the Hobbit's neck. Bilbo tore away, pointing a sword he didn't know how to use.
"Let me think." said the Hobbit.
Bilbo didn't know the answer. I wanted to yell out to him, but that might distract him, giving Gollum a chance to attack, or I could lose to element of surprise, which was currently giving me an upper hand, should things get ugly.
"It's stuck." Gollum realized. "Bagginses it stuck."
Bilbo was pacing and taping his forehead frantically.
Gollum spread his arms and said, "Time's up."
"C'mon, Bilbo." I whispered. "Figure it out."
Quietly, Bilbo said, "Time. The answer is time."
Gollum growled as Bilbo cleared his throat and said, "Actually it wasn't that hard."
Gollum glared at him murderously and hissed, "Last question."
From where I was sitting, I could see him pick up a fair sized rock. My entire body went on alert. Every muscle froze, every nerve went crazy.
"Okay." Bilbo said. He thought for a moment, clearly unable to think of a word puzzle that could stump this vile creature.
"Ask us." Gollum encouraged, then -in a much less kind voice- demanded, "ASK US."
"Yes, yes. All right." Bilbo assured him.
I saw him reach into his shirt pocket and say, "What have I got.. in my pocket?"
Gollum looked confused before telling Biblo, "That's no fair. It's not fair! It's against the rules!"
