Chapter 10: the interns

Red. Blue. Red. Blue.

The flashing lights catch my attention in the distance. Thank god. I wave my hands, still keeping Liv in my arms. The vehicle parks on the side of the road and I see a few paramedics get out and go to Daniel. To be honest I would rather put him in jail right now. If they could only know what he did. Maybe they'd agree with me.

"You'll be okay Liv." I whisper and look down at her. But her eyes are closed again. Her face is pale and blue takes over her lips.

"Liv?" I panic and slap her cheek lightly, but she still remains unconscious. Blue lips mean she's not getting any air in her lungs. Most likely a collapsed lung. Damn! How did I not notice it before? I barely blinked and her life is already on the line.

"Hey! I need some help over here!" I yell as I see a single paramedic climb out of the ambulance. I see his head turn in the darkness and he motions a couple more people who roll over a stretcher towards us.

"Sir, I need you to step back." He holds a hand in front of me to keep me away but I push it away, quick on my feet.

"No way in hell, I'm a doctor and there's not a chance I'm leaving her."

His eyes widen and I help the other two lift Liv onto the stretcher. This guy obviously has an ego on him. I may have been one of those cowboy interns back when I first started. So I'll let it slide for now.

The three of us roll her onto the ambulance with the other one trailing behind. He must have regained his confidence because he speaks up and hands me some gloves.

"What do we got?"

"Collapsed lung, broken leg, third-degree burns. We need to stabilize her breathing with a breathing tube down to her airway." I stare as I slip the gloves on. This feeling feels so foreign to me now. I don't even know how I'm keeping it together, considering the condition that Olivia is in.

They stare at me in astonishment. God they must be rookies.

"Did I stutter? Get on it! We need to start an IV to keep the blood pressure up."

I turn to one of the other mousy interns and get as close to his face as I can, "and if you screw this one up I will wreck you."

He gulps and looks down, trying so hard to keep himself from looking at me.

They all nod nervously and scramble to get everything ready. I put a blanket over her and place the back of my hand on her cheek. She's so cold. Like someone has cursed her with skin of ice.

I sit on the stool next to the stretcher and prepare to stitch up a cut on her cheek. I zone out the cacophony of the three interns and am careful to watch every turn and bump of the ambulance as I put the needle through her skin. She doesn't need a scar reminding her of this night for the rest of her life. I at least owe that to her for everything she's done for me.

"Talk to me about the other guy." I demand, still keeping my focus on keeping a steady pace with the needle.

Rodriguez, as it says on her tag, reads off of the clipboard that she has recorded all the information on.

"He's in critical condition with possible abdominal trauma, concussion, and a few broken ribs. We may be able to stabilize him, but there's a chance that he may not make it."

I nod and tie off the stitches. I'm surprised he's in worse condition than her. She must've been in the back of the car when they crashed. There's no way she could've ended up in the ditch from the front seat where the car was positioned at the scene.

"How did this happen?" Decker speaks up, or as I have already nicknamed him Doctor Douche. I internally roll my eyes.

"Drunk driver."

"They were hit by a drunk driver?" The third, Helm squeaks. I think I'll call him hellmouth.

"No!" I snap and then sigh, realizing how stupid I sound. "He was drunk driving, and she was drugged in the back seat. She's the victim. He doesn't deserve any mercy." I touch Olivia's forehead.

"How did she survive this?" The nervous intern steps up, scanning his eyes over Liv. "It's likely that she could've broken every bone in her body with the force of the impact. It.. it's like a miracle that she's even alive right now."

I don't know whether I want to yell at him, or hug him. Just reminding me of the condition she's in hit me hard. But he's right. She probably should be dead right now. Maybe it's a coincidence. Or maybe it it's God. He seems to work in mysterious ways with me.

"I'll make sure to talk to the police as soon as we get to the hospital." I seethe. "This is a sexual assault case now."
My fists clench against the side of the stretcher. Just saying those two words has me fuming. I never thought that they'd ever even have to leave my mouth. Daniel is lucky that I'm not in his ambulance right now, or else I probably would've killed him myself.

All three of the interns go quiet. In five minutes, I have learned each one of their personalities. But not their names. And I don't know if I really care to. Call me a jerk, but every memory from this accident, I want to forget. I want to take Liv home and care for her myself if it means she won't have to go through this alone.

Here's sort of a filler chapter
