Summer is the best time of the year to sort your life out! However, even if you are reading this at another time of the year, you can definitely find some hours in your day to squeeze in a bit of decluttering
In modern societies, we are constantly encouraged to buy more and more. All of us (me included) probably have a lot more than we actually use. However, all this clutter is not harmless. It increases our stress, we have a more cluttered mind and our thoughts tend to be as messy as our belongings. It is simply not healthy to have that many things especially for those who live in small spaces.
So, here's my challenge. I am trying to organize my entire room and throw away everything that I am not using or that I don't feel like it has a purpose. I have already started with my bedside table, that was definitely one of the most cluttered spaces in my room and now it has only few but super useful things like meds etc. After that, I decluttered all my office supplies and decided to give a ton away to children and friends. I still have to declutter my closet as well as a small space where I store all the things that don't really have a place in my room.
But while I do that, here are some tips you can use to declutter your closet specifically and create a more viable environment in your home/bedroom/life.
Tip #1
Take everything out
You can't just start pulling out things from your closet and decide if you want to keep it or not. Instead, you should take everything out of the space you are organizing e.g. closet and start decluttering.
Tip #2
Donate, throw away, keep
You should make three separate piles for your stuff. The things that are in good condition but you don't want to keep around, the things that aren't useful anymore and the things you want to keep. This way, you can ensure that you are not throwing away something another person could use.
Tip #3
Sorting out the "donate" pile
When looking through the things you want to give away, look for things your friends might want to take. You can give them away for free or for a small price. Some of my friends have actually created instagram accounts where they sell their old clothes for a really small price. This way you can earn some money while getting rid of things you don't need.
Then, for the things you know your friends wouldn't wear, you could always take them to your local thrift shop or any charity that you know that takes used clothes. You will feel great by knowing that your old clothes will go to someone who can't afford buying new ones.
Tip #4
Deciding what to keep
Here's a simple trick to tell if you need a piece of clothing or not. Ask yourself : Have I worn this in the past year?
If the answer is no, then you are probably never going to wear it. If the answer is yes, ask yourself again; Do I feel great in this?
All your clothes should make you feel amazing! They should fit you and show off the things you want to show off while maybe consealing some things you want to conceal.
Tip #5
I love this, but it doesn't fit.
If you have a piece of clothing that you like, but it doesn't fit you anymore. Then consider doing one of the following things:
1) Try to work around it.
If something is too big on your waist for example, but fine on the hips you can easily fix that by adding a belt.
2) Tailor it
You can tailor things yourself or have them tailored (I usually ask my grandma to do it no shame)
At the end of the day, we live in an era when we would rather throw something away rather than try to fix it but I think that sometimes it's worth it to respect the money you have spent on something and to try to work around its issues.
