I can't believe you said that. Jared thought to his brother, who was sitting in the waiting room beyond the door he was glaring at, as he felt a needle begin to thread through his back. He'd done a lot more damage than he'd thought, and the disinfectant hadn't been any kind of pleasant, either.
I can't believe you got so mad about it. What's wrong with liking him?
Jared couldn't even count the number of things wrong with liking Knight. The guy was infuriating, to say the least. He could never bite his tongue and had the attention span of a bird... that wasn't a hawk.
A chicken. Always pecking at things he doesn't need to.
He winced as the needle slipped into his skin at a particularly sore spot.
Besides, you and Palace are more a couple than me and Knight. He tossed back, feeling a simmer of frustration begin to well up in his brother's mind.
What is going on with you two, anyways? He asked, honestly curious.
When silence met his ears, Jared sighed, forcing himself to remain still as the doctor finished stitching up his back. It was another twenty minutes before he was discharged, and feeling more than a bit loopy because of the strong pain medication.
"Let's get you home so you can rest. Do you want me to stay over, or?" Jamie asked as he helped Jared walk, one of his brother's arms slung over his shoulder.
"I think I'll be able to manage if you can get me inside. This medicine will probably knock me out soon."
Jamie nodded, helping Jared into the car before shutting his door and walking around to the driver's side. The trip back was quiet in a verbal sense, especially so because Jared fell asleep after barely five minutes.
Normally, he didn't snore much, if at all, but the medication must have been incredible, because Jamie was wincing every few seconds with the volume his brother was putting out.
Thankfully, once they pulled up outside of Jared's two-story home, Jamie was able to wake his brother enough to get him on his feet, with some effort. Knowing that he wouldn't be able to drag him all the way up to his room, he headed toward the couch and deposited him there.
"You sure you're good?" Jamie asked as he ran into the kitchen and grabbed a glass of water to leave on the small side table next to the sofa.
When he returned and set it down, he noticed that his brother was already back to snoring as loud as possible.
"I'll take that as a yes. I'll check up on you in a bit. Get some rest, bro."
He left and locked the door behind him using the key Jared had given him when he'd bought the house. They had access to each others' and often spent time just hanging out on their rare days off.
It was close to midnight when there was a scratch at the door a few feet away from where Jared was fast asleep. The lock on the sliding glass door clicked open after a few minutes, but it wasn't opened just yet.
Faint whispers roused Jared's lion, but it could do little more than listen as the door was slowly pushed open. Jared had done too much damage to his back to shift again and risk destroying the stitches, making his lion try to get his attention through his sleep-clouded thoughts.
"We just need to get him and go. You saw him at the hospital, he's badly injured. He'll have to help us find the wolf he was with when they were leaving the forest earlier or risk much worse." A rough voice said as the owner stepped inside, his large boots making loud thumping noises in the silence of the house.
