Macy was hanging out in her room. She was sitting at her window seat day dreaming and watching the clouds move at their own pace in the sky. It wasn't a really cloudy day, but there were enough in the sky so she could make shapes out of them like when she was 6. A knock came at the door. "Come in," Mace said absentmindedly. A small voice said, "I'm sorry, I don't want you to leave. I've been trying to keep Jeremiah safe ever since our parents left though. I didn't mean to be a prick about you staying around." The small voice belonged to Jade. "It's okay Jade, I forgive you."
"It's not okay, but thank you. And you should probably eat something. Jem says it's unlike you not to eat. He's worried."
"Tell him he doesn't have to be. I'm just not hungry. I may or may not eat lunch either. I don't know yet."
"Okay..."
"Jade?"
"Yeah?"
"If it makes any difference I think it was awesome of you to choose your brothers safety over mine. I know I'd want to do that if I were an older sister, and I'd want that for myself if I had an older sibling. Honestly I'd want you to choose him over me. Every time."
"Thank you Macy, that means a lot to me that you tell me all of that."
"You're welcome."Jade left, shutting the door silently behind her. Macy needed something to do. She just wanted to get out of the house and walk somewhere without needing to be supervised. And she felt supervised inside that house. Mace pulled out her phone and texted Jem.
Jeremy
Hey, I know you're
in the house, but I wanted
to ask, do you want to
go to the library or something?
10:43 amSure, I need to get out
of the house anyways.
Are we walking or driving?
10:43 amDepends, what's the weather
like and how far away is it?
10:44 amThe weather is supposed
to stay sunny and above
50 all day, and it's only about
3 blocks away.
10:47 amHeck yeah! Definitely
walking! In this weather?
How could you pass that up?
10:49 amOkay then. Meet me in
front of the house in 5 minutes.
10:50 amOkay, five minutes.
I'll be there.
10:50 am
