Chapter 25: Assignment

Sky and Junior's funerals had cost me many expenses, so I no longer had the money Junior and I saved up to move away.

It would take me about 2-3 months to gain everything back. Plus, it was harder on me because I now had to pay all the bills. That meant that instead of 2-3 months, I'd probably need 4-5.

That was the only reason why Nick was able to see me at work today and every other day so worked.

I had requested to work 5 days out of the week, so I only had Saturdays and Sundays off. That, of course, included Nick working five days too.

Nick had offered many times to financially help me, but I turned down all offers, especially the ones for the funerals.

Mr. Carter: Don't forget we have a meeting in 5.

Me: Okay.

I grabbed my pens, my glasses, and notepad. I then met Nick by the elevator, and we went down together.

The silence was awkward, as usual, but it was also routine by now.

Nick cleared his throat and asked, "Is..um...is there any update or notifications for me?"

"Mr. Rose wants to discuss finances with you tomorrow," I informed. "The secretary also quit the job last night."

"Okay," he nodded. "You'll have to be both the assistant and secretary until a new one is found. You're also in charge of broadcasting the job and picking the 5 best applicants for me to interview."

"I'm sure the lady at the front desk would like to have the position. She barely has working hours and-" I got out before being cut off.

"I want for you to have both positions," he stated, and I knew there would be no use arguing with him. "You'll be paid for both positions."

"Um...okay," I nodded.

It would financially help me, afterall.

"When the meeting ends and I go back to my office, we'll talk about something I want you to write," he added.

I nodded in response, and we walked out the elevator and into the room we were having the meeting in.

"As you know, ever since I got this job, I've been avoiding the press," he started.

"Or the press has been avoiding you," I mumbled.

"Well, that too," he nodded. "Knowing my affiliations, they haven't tried to even take a picture of me. Anyways, I want the press to meet the professional side of me."

"And the purpose of this is...?" I asked.

"For the company to continue it's growth. A lot of people seem to think that there is illegal activity going on in this business. Before I became President, my uncle had a few dirty contracts, but as you know, I cleared those up. For the simple fact that I'm in the mafia, peiple are assuming more than ever that illegal activity exists. This has had a negative financial impact on the company. In order to continue growing the company and increasing it's investors, I want the public to view the company differently."

"Starting off by knowing you?" I frowned.

"The professional me, yes," he answered. "I want you to email a few journalists and schedule meetings for them to meet me individually. I also want you to write a professional speech about me. You'll present it at my art exhibit. I want paparazzi, celebrities, investors, and friends- excluding those from the mafia- to be there. Understood?"

"Yes," I answered. "When and where is the exhibit? Also am I in charge of creating and sending out invitations?"

"You are, yes, and I'll send the info to your work email," he answered. "Remember: everything must be professional. Also, I'd like to review the speech when it's completed."

I nodded with understanding.

"Is there anything else, sir?" I asked.

"No," he shook his head. "You're dismissed."

I walked to my room and opened my lap top. I signed into my work email and read the information about the exhibit.

I then worked on the invitations. The exhibit was in two weeks, so everything felt a little overwhelming.

I knew the hardest part of my assignment would be writing the speech. It required my putting away of feelings, and I didn't know if I'd be capable of doing so.

It would be even harder to present the thoughts expressed in the speech.
