After about a week went by, Clay still hadn't woken up yet. Each day that passed, Clay's friends, along with Ryan, Courtney, Sheri, Zach, Justin, and the girl who used to date Jeff, came by to visit him.
Throughout the week, Skye barely left the hospital, only leaving when her parents made her leave and come back home. Often times, Skye would end up staying the night with Clay in the hospital, because she wanted to keep him company, even if he wasn't awake yet. The same went for Hannah and her parents. Since they knew Clay as well as they did, they rarely left the hospital as well. Lainie and Matt almost never left their son's side. Lainie was currently taking some time off of work so she could be with her son at the hospital, but Matt would occationally have to leave if he got called in to work.
Currently, Matt, Lainie, and Skye were all quietly sitting together in the small hospital room with a still sleeping Clay. Hannah and her parents had left not too long ago to go check on the store and check the inventory as well.
After a while, Matt and Lainie had decided that they needed a small break and wanted to get some food. "Are you sure you don't want anything, Skye?" Matt asked kindly. "Yeah, I'm ok. But thanks for the offer, Mr. Jensen." Skye replied with a small smile. "Are you sure you're ok staying here with him while we're gone for a few minutes, Skye?" Lainie asked, gesturing towards her son at the last part. Skye looked up from the magazine she was flipping through before placing it on her lap and glancing over at Clay. "Yeah. I'm sure, Mrs. Jensen. I know you two could use a break, and I don't mind staying here with him while you get something to eat." Skye replied. Matt and Lainie smiled at their son's childhood friend. "I'll let you know if he wakes up or anything, though." Skye added with a smile. "Thanks, Skye. We really appreciate it." Lainie said with a small smile before she and Matt left the room to head down to the hospital cafeteria to find something to eat.
After the two adults left the room, Skye continued flipping through her magazine, just scanning over the pages in an attempt to keep herself somewhat busy. Pretty soon, the teen just discarded it and settled on listening to the steadily beeping heart monitor as she watched Clay's chest slowly rise and fall.
Not even five minutes later, the beeping was accompanied by a faint noise that sounded like quiet groaning. Instantly becoming hopeful, Skye stood from her chair and walked over to the side of the small hospital bed. "Clay?" She asked curiously. A slight movement grabbed her attention as Skye slowly looked down towards the boys hand, taking it in her own and holding his hand. "Clay, if you can hear me right now, try squeezing my hand." She instructed. After a few seconds passed, Skye felt a small pressure on her hand. It was faint, but it was still noticably there, nonetheless. After feeling Clay respond the tiniest bit, Skye smiled brightly to herself. "Can you do that again for me, Clay?" Skye asked hopefully. In response, Skye slowly felt another pressure to her hand, only this time, it was slightly stronger than before. Shortly after, Skye glanced up to look at her friend's face. When she did, she smiled even more as she noticed him starting to open his eyes the slightest bit.
"Skye?" Clay asked after fully opening his eyes, his voice sounding hoarse. "Hey, Clay." Skye said quietly, gently sitting on the edge of the bed as she smiled down at him and still held his hand in hers. "What happened?" He asked after a small attempt to sit up caused him to groan in pain. Skye used her free hand to gently push him back down, her gentleness towards him helping to calm him down a little. "What all do you remember?" Skye asked, sounding nervous for his answer. After some thought, Clay looked confused as well. "I don't know. A lot of it is blurry, I guess. The last clear thing I can remember is..." Clay trailed off as his mind traveled to the first clear memory he could recall. "When you stopped me from ending my life." He finished, glancing up at Skye at the end. Clay's answer rendered Skye completely speechless and shocked as she recalled that specific memory as well.
The memory took place before Clay met Hannah. It was back at the end of Clay's freshman year, when he would get bullied, teased, beat up, and picked on all the time at school. It was a memory that Skye remembered perfectly to this day. It was something she still occasionally had nightmares about as well. It was a time that Clay had been driven over the edge by everyone teasing him and all the rumors about him being gay were the talk of the school. It was a time that Clay Jensen had come so close to ending it all. As she recalled the memory, Skye couldn't help but remember seeing her best friend break down as he held a gun to the side of his head. She even remembered how his face had been bruised at the time from a more recent beating he got from the jocks at Liberty High. Luckily, Skye had been able to slowly talk Clay out of ending it all, and she had managed to get him to slowly but surely hand over the gun he had somehow gotten from Tyler Down. It was a night that brought the two friends so much closer to each other, helped them to better understand the other, and caused the two childhood friends to make a pact to always be there for one another through anything and everything.
"Skye? You ok?" A voice asked, suddenly pulling Skye out of her thoughts. "Yeah, I'm fine." She answered, using her free hand to wipe away the tears that had formed in her eyes. When she looked back down at Clay, she saw him giving her a sad look, and she instantly knew that he knew she remembered that night as well. "I should tell your parents that you're awake now." Skye said with a small smile. "They're here too?" Clay asked, sounding surprised. "They are. They're just down at the cafeteria right now." Skye told him. "Hey, can I ask you something?" Skye asked curiously after thinking about something. "Sure, I guess." Clay said in response. "Hannah Baker. Does that name sound familiar or ring any bells?" Skye asked curiously, knowing that Hannah Baker was his girlfriend. Clay thought for a minute, replaying the name in his head. "I don't know. That name doesn't ring any bells or anything, but I can't help but think I know it from somewhere." Clay said thoughtfully. "What about Jessica Davis and Alex Standall? Do those names ring any bells?" Skye asked curiously. Clay thought again before sighing. "No. It's the same with that first one you mentioned. They sound kind of familiar, like I know them or have heard them from somewhere, but I can't place why they sound familiar to me." Clay said. "Why do you ask?" He questioned curiously. Skye slowly stood from the edge of the bed. "No reason. Don't worry about it." She told him as she reached into her pocket to retrieve her phone and let his parents know that he finally woke up.
