***Emilia****3 days earlier*
Beep! Beep! Beep!
I fluttered my eyes open at the sound of incessant beeping, but the bright light streaming through the window forced them shut again. When I finally managed to keep them open, I looked around what appeared to be a private hospital room. Turning my head to the left, I saw Lucas leaning against the wall, his eyes closed. Suddenly, everything came flooding back to me. My baby! It couldn't have been a dream. Oh God! I covered my mouth as I looked down at my stomach and screamed.
Lucas' head snapped up. "Emilia, thank God you're awake."
"Lucas," I whispered, my voice raspy. "What happened to my bab-"
"The baby is fine," he cut in. "You went into shock, but the doctors managed to save the baby."
I sighed in relief, but my heart was still pounding. "My baby is fine." I repeated, laughing hysterically.
Lucas smiled gently. "Yes."
Impulsively, I dragged him by the collar and pulled him into a hug. "Thank you," I cried. "Thank you so much."
He pulled away and cupped my face in his hands, staring at me worriedly. I felt a sudden pang of anxiety. "Where's Damien? Did you save him? Is he okay?" I asked frantically.
He nodded. "Damien is fine."
I let out another sigh of relief. "I want to see him," I pleaded.
"You will, once you're discharged from here. But you have to listen to me first..." He reached out and grabbed my hand, turning me to face him. "This war is far from over, Emilia." I heard fear in his voice. " Danish will be back..."
I leaned back, suddenly terrified. "What are you trying to say to me, Lucas?" I trembled.
"RUN."
**Present**
I ran my hands over my stomach for the millionth time since being discharged from the hospital. I could feel the baby moving inside me, giving me the warmest feeling. This was never supposed to happen. I wasn't supposed to feel any connection with this baby, but somehow I did, and now *I can't let go.*
But I'm irrationally terrified that this baby will never be safe. As Lucas had said, the war was far from over. Danish would be back. I couldn't sit back and let this baby be used for some bullshit family drama.
"I have to do this," I whispered as I ran my fingers across Damien's face, watching him sleep. He was definitely a sight to behold-
Suddenly, tears began pouring down my cheeks. How was I supposed to live without him? How would I fend for this child on my own? Where would we go? These questions lingered in my mind, but I knew I had to find a way.
I covered my mouth with my hands to stifle my throbbing sobs.
"Forgive me," I leaned down, tears streaming, and pressed my lips lightly against his, causing him to stir slightly. "Don't forget me," I breathed against his lips. Then, with one last painful look at him, I picked up my bag from the floor.
And I did it.
I ran.
