The next few days, while they were still on vacation, Jimin acted like nothing happened. Yoongi and Hoseok had tried to talk to him about it but he wouldn’t listen. The big show on New Year’s ball was getting closer. Jungkook, Hoseok and Jimin were working too hard for it. They went to school for practice nearly every day. Hoseok and Yoongi had agreed to stay in Tae’s house during the holidays after protesting for a while and seeing it was no use. It was the holiday season and everyone’s mood was up, even though Jimin deeply regretted not being able to go home to his mom because he was busy practicing.

When the big day finally came, there was a fuss in the house. It was finally 31st of december, the day for new year’s ball and Taehyung’s birthday. However, everyone was too busy preparing for the show that no one seemed to remember it.

His dad had celebrated his birthday the second he saw Tae that morning. Yoonji had pulled him into a small room and she had given him a set of small earrings and had hugged him. His mother had wished him a happy birthday right in front of everyone during breakfast! EVERYONE! And none of them even looked up from their phones, Jimin had absent mindedly nodded and Jungkook had mumbled ‘yeah’. Taehyung was getting more and more desperate every passing hour. He had seen that one large group of friends (of thirteen people) celebrate their “American Hyung’s” birthday just the other day! He knew it was a stupid thing to get jealous of, but he had TWO boyfriends and he had hoped at least one of them would remember his birthday! It wasn’t hard to retain too, his birthday was the same day as the new year’s eve!

Finally, it was eight pm, the time the ball was starting. Jungkook, Hoseok and Jimin were in the backstage preparing for the show. They had been there for seven hours now! He was with Yoongi and some other people he only knew by name, in school’s big basketball court they used for PE lessons. He had been helping with the decorations of the place, and now it was unrecognizable. When they were done (about fifteen minutes ago) they had collapsed onto the chairs they had carried from classrooms over a few hours ago, exhausted. Now, as people were starting to show up, he was sitting with Yoongi. There was an awkward-ish silence between them. They didn’t know what to talk about. And Taehyung would have wanted me to add that Yoongi hadn’t said anything about his birthday, even though they were together nearly the whole day and Taehyung had been hinting at it all the time by saying stuff like “These decorations sure look like BIRTHDAY decorations to me…” or “Why are we celebrating new year’s eve anyways? Is it someone’s BIRTHDAY?”

“So… what’s the deal with the lady in your house anyways?” Yoongi started speaking.

    “What do you mean?”

“That lady… Min Yoonji. She looks so much like me!”

    “Meh… I don’t really see it…”

“Seriously? I feel like I’m looking in the mirror!” He laughed. It was one of the rare times he did that. Taehyung stopped being irritated for a second and smiled. Subtle music had started to play and the room was slowly filling up.

“We should go backstage to check on our friends.” Tae said.

“NO!” Yoongi paused for a second. “No… I mean… they need to rest and get ready for the show. We should just stay here and relax. Plus, do you really wanna miss the party here?” He gestured around the room, there was literally nothing interesting. Taehyung shrugged and the awkward silence started again.

“Tae, I know we’ve been friends for a long time now… but I am just realising now that we know so little about each other’s past.”

    “What are you suggesting..?”
