I hid the painting underneath my jacket as the rain hit my body like bullets piercing through my skin. The familiar scent of wet grass reminded me of when I was younger.

I always loved the smell of the rain hitting the grass outside. When I would go out with my mom, we would always dance in the rain because the rain would make us sad. And I never liked it when my mom was sad.

---

With the water splashing up at me with every footstep, I make it to my house.

I run up the front steps and fumble with the keys, holding the painting to my chest. I quickly steady my keys and unlock the door, swinging it open with all my strength.

I bite my lip and lean against the wall, tossing my painting down on my kitchen counter.

I put both hands on my knees, taking deep, harsh breaths as I hear my dog sprint towards me.

"Hey Holly," I say, bending down to greet a fluffy, loving creature. "Awwwe, I missed you so much," I admit, letting her lick my cheeks.

I pick her up and walk into the living room.

My stepmom is sitting on the couch watching the weather channel, biting her fingernails with a worried expression on her face.

She glances up at me, placing her hands down slowly.

I watched as a gentle smile formed on her face as she got up to give me a hug.

"Oh my God, I'm so happy you're home," My stepmom admits, running her hands through my hair, then kissing my forehead.

"Why?" I ask, placing Holly back down on the ground.

"You didn't hear about it?" She asks, looking back over at the television which is blasting the audio unbearably loud.

I furrow my eyebrows as moisture begins to form in her eyes.

"I'm very scared of thunderstorms like this," She admits, taking a deep breath as she feels the tear fall down her cheek,

"I'm terrified of tornadoes,"

I nod my head, "Me too," I reply, looking over at the TV.

"This thunderstorm is not like the others we have experienced in a while. This thunderstorm is labeled as a Supercell Thunderstorm. I'm getting reports that inside this monstrous storm, there are severe rotating up drifts, which could produce a tornado,"

I glance down at the bottom of the screen which reads,

"Everybody in the Missouri Bates County, please seek shelter immediately,"

I get a notification on my phone, breaking my gaze from the television.

I quickly open my phone and read,

Severe Tornado Warning In Your Area, Seek Shelter Immediately

There's one problem that could potentially end both our lives...

We don't have a basement nor do we have any sort of underground cover.
