Chapter 6
Vic's P.O.V.
I don't know what's wrong with Jaime. He left the cafeteria early and didn't say a single word. I frown, not liking where this is heading. I know my best friend.
I turn back towards Kellin, hoping that Jaime is all right.
We start up a conversation about music. It seems to be that King Kellin wants to start a band one day too, and he has lots of ideas for songs. We discuss our recent lyrics that we came up with, but I am careful not to reveal too much. Like I said before, I preferred to keep the windows to my soul private glassed.
"Oh, and thanks." Kellin says as I begin getting up to throw away the remnants of my now eaten lunch.
"For what?" I ask.
Kellin shrugs as he gets up. He didn't eat too much, so he doesn't have anything to throw out, but he follows me anyway. "Just for talking to me. It means a lot."
I nod. "Yeah, I guess you aren't as bad as I thought." Kellin grins and turns away, and we go to our respected classes. A lot of the time we are in the same classes, but of course, not all of them. Jaime is in my next class (History) and I plan on talking to him. I have to approach the problem before it escalates.
I hurry into class just before the bell. Mrs. Armington glares at me from at her desk, gnarled hands setting down an envelope. She gets up as I sit down beside Jaime, who barely glances at me.
"Alright all you hard headed, hormone filled imbeciles," Armington declares from the front of the class, "Take out your projects. Now!"
I scramble to find my project, but Jaime already has it. It's a group project and we got to choose who we work with.
Jaime is all business when he states, "We have to put this here, or the historical output will be inaccurate. Oh, and do you have your side of the typed up copy finished?" He repositions one of the buildings on our model.
"God Jaime, is everything all right?"
Jaime looks up and shrugs. "You tell me. What was that? You hate Kellin."
I sigh. "Haven't you ever heard about second chances?"
"Yes, I have. Many times." Jaime goes back to work and I follow suit. He'd be fine later today, I hope.
And so that's how these past two weeks seem to go. Jaime acting all moody and awkward, striking up a few friendly conversations and then wandering off. I'm getting to know Kellin better day by day, and he isn't that bad a guy at all. He's actually pretty nice, though of course everyone has their flaws. I wrote a few new songs and hung out with Kellin on the weekend instead of Jaime. I didn't know if he wanted to see me or not. I talked for hours with Kellin, and I even got to hang out with his friend Matty, who is a really cool guy. Apparently, Kellin and I have a lot in common, though I won't tell him that.
On the second weekend of befriending Kellin, I drive past Jaime's house on the way to meet Kellin at the mall. I bite my lip, considering slowing down and talking to him, but I can't bring myself to. I'm a terrible best friend.
I find a parking spot what felt like hours later. Kellin is lounging by the entrance, wearing a black fedora.
"Where'd you get that?" I say, pointing at it. He lays a hand on his hat.
"I like fedoras, so I got a new one while I was waiting." He smiles, giving me a What Can You Do? look. "Anyways, I bet you love how I look." He winks at me and I roll my eyes.
