*Saturday Morning - The practice match*
Just when I thought the gym couldn't smell any worse, it did. Now double the amount of sweaty high school boys were stretching, tossing and chatting away and I just sat in the corner, muttering to myself about how it's worth it just to see Oikawa’s face when he walks my dog tomorrow.
“Heads!” I snapped myself out of my thoughts just in time as an orb of white, green and red came flying at my face, and I ducked. The bang on the wall above me made me curse, and I looked up to glare at the offender. He smirking, which instantly irked me. Clad yellow, he jogged up to me and picked the ball up.
“Watch it, man…” I mumbled, standing up and fixing my (H/C) hair. The boy; or man, if I were to go by appearance, snickered and shrugged.
“No harm done, thanks to your reflexes…” He chuckled, placing the ball between his hand and his hip, giving me a once over with his dark eyes. I clicked my tongue, folding my arms.
“Tch, I thought you were a bigshot Tokyo team...but your aim tells me otherwise…” I mused, walking away in search of Iwaizumi. Not that I would ever admit it out loud, but he was extremely intimidating. Something about his whole aura made me uncomfortable, so I sought out Iwaizumi and his beefy biceps to feel a little more at ease. The boy in question was thankfully Oikawa-less when I found him.
“You look frustrated.” He mused as I leant on the wall beside him.
“Aren't I always? It positively reeks in here! It's like Satan's asshole chugged a pint of asparagus piss!” I faked a gag and Iwaizumi rubbed his temples, shaking his head.
“You're sick, you know that?” He muttered and I placed a hand over my chest, fluttering my lashes as I feigned innocence.
“Little ol’ me? Heavens, no!” I upped my pitch to sound like a little girl before snorting at his less than impressed reaction. “Well excuse me for voicing the offence to my nostrils!”
“You're starting to be as dramatic as Shittykawa.” He laughed, ruffling my hair. Great, now I have to fix it a second time in less than ten minutes. Not only did I have to breathe through my mouth alone, but the squeaking of rubber against the polished floors made me silently wish I was temporarily deaf.
“I'm not dramatic...just sarcastic. Now, speaking of Captain Crap, where is he?” I followed Iwa’s finger as he pointed over to the group of girls crowded around something across the other side of the court, swooning and giggling as though an idol was present.
“Amidst that.” He said flatly.
“How the hell did I miss that?” I turned to jab him in the ribs, even managing to wind him a little. “Jealous, Pineapple Head?” He glared at me, rubbing his side.
“Hardly…” He mumbled, starting to stretch his godly arms behind his head. Oh god, why are they so godly?! I tore my eyes away and searched the gym for a particular blond. I couldn't see him anywhere. “If you're looking for Kyōtani, he's outside. He avoids being around too many people at once.” Iwa’s voice broke into my thoughts and I flushed a little, stepping away from the wall.
“I, uh, just wanted to make sure he wasn't gonna cause trouble!” I said quickly. Damn, that may have been a bit obvious… Iwa cocked a brow and gave me a taunting smirk.
“I didn't think there'd be more to it...before that.” He snickered, ignoring my huff as I strode off towards the doors.
--------------------------------------------------------
It was a hot day; surprising for the end of September. The initial glare made me squint and curse under my breath before blinking away the white spots in my vision. I peered around before my eyes met Kyōtani’s. He was staring at me from a few yards away, sitting against the wall. Again cursing the heat, I walked over and gave him a smile.
“Hey (Y/N)-Chan…” He greeted quietly, and I almost tripped on air. He spoke first? Did I hear that right?
“Hey...You ready for the match?” I invited myself to sit beside him, keeping a small distance between us so he wouldn't get agitated.
“Yeah. Won't get put in though.” He said with a sigh, twisting his shoes on the pavement. The crunch made the silence a little bearable as I thought of a response.
“You never know. I haven't gotten to see you play in a match before, but I can tell you have both the passion and ability to be the ace. You just need to try to listen to your team. I know they all think the same as I do.” I smiled as he looked up. His expression was one mixed with confusion and denial.
“But they're stupid…” I mentally kicked myself when I let out a short giggle, earning myself an annoyed glare.
“Sorry...I know at least Oikawa is an idiot, but you can't deny that he has talent and knows what he's talking about. He's a cunning little shit who understands his team, bringing out their best. He sees your potential...he's told me.” Kyōtani softened, stretching his legs out and beginning to warm up without a word. I just sat quietly and watched him, resting my chin upon my knees. His muscles flexed as he reached to his feet and I found myself following the pattern of his protruding veins along his forearms.
Stop gawking, (Y/N)...you're gonna start drooling! It took so much effort to drag my eyes away to focus on the cement. I didn't look back to him until I checked my watch, standing and brushing off some dust.“It's about time to start, Kyōtani-Kun.” I announced, holding my hand out to help him up.
“Kentarō…” He said as he took my hand in his.
“P..pardon?” Damn it, I stuttered.
“Call...call me Kentarō…” He muttered as he hoisted himself up, barely putting any weight on my arm. I nodded absently, hearing my pulse pound in my ears.
“Okay then...Kentarō-Kun…” For some reason, his name felt right coming out of my mouth.
Kentarō Kentarō Kentarō… I repeated it over and over in my head, trying to force myself to dislike it or at least find it less appealing. No luck.
Fuck…It took me a while to realise we were still joined by our hands, and Kyōtani was just staring with his clouded amber eyes. I retracted my hand a bit too quickly and let out a fake cough, turning to the doors.
“Le..let's go then…”
Fuuuuuuuck my liiiiiiiiiiife!
***quick note: I'm sorry if the seasons get weird and make no sense! I'm in Australia, so I'm not very familiar with seasons in the northern hemisphere, so I just went along with American ones? I'm hoping they're similar to Japan but this is fiction and I'm trying! Hahaha, it's currently past midnight and my daughter has stolen my bed so may as well keep writing!***
