Zander POV:

A growl rips from my core as I pounce on the red-haired wolf. He scurries away from me but I catch him quickly, wrapping my forearms around his waist. He whines but anger blinds me. I don't stop. I feel his ribs crack under my grip.

Finish him, my wolf snarls. The red-haired wolf whines again, letting out a painful groan. I let go and he falls to the ground, slowly changing back to his human form. No, my wolf whispers, finish him. I shake my head, pushing away the pestering voice as I shift into my human form. I crouch beside the dejected man, my eyes still glowing black.

"Tell your Alpha I'll be back to finish him soon. We're not done," my voice comes out low. The man nods frightened the crawls away into the thick foliage of the trees. My wolfs roars inside me.

No, make him pay. Go after him.

No Steel, I respond turning back to the clearing, Not yet. Let him go. Tell his new Alpha I'm alive. I must become stronger, and once I do, I'll go back. And we'll rip all of them to shreds. My wolf remains quiet, agreeing with my words. For now.

My knees collapse as I kneel beside my mother's broken body. Her breath is ragged as she reaches up to touch my face. I close my eyes, memorizing everything. The feel of her hand on my cheek. Her lilac scent my father used to say he loved.

A tear slips down my cheek as I open my eyes. She smiles painfully at me. I pull her into my arms, wishing to warm her.

"Zander," she croaks, "You must...must find your mate."

"I know mother," he whispers, smiling a little at her words. She had told him this ever since his thirteenth birthday. She shakes her end and her eyes flutter.

"Zander. Your...mate will give you strength. I promise she won't be like him. Take back what is...yours. And take what is his. Do not let our death...be...in vain."

My face hardens in steely determination. "I will mother."

"May...the moon bless you," she smiles the light in her eyes shimmering before blinking out. Her lifeless body stared up at the starry night. Her body angled towards the moon even after death. I bury her where the moonlight hits knowing it is what she would have wanted.

When the moon rises to its full peak I let myself shift, letting my wolf take charge. He howls sullenly at the moon. We are the only people at the funeral. Everyone else either dead or taken. I curl up beside my mother's grave. I will not let her death be in vain. I will find my mate, my other half. And then together. We will take back what is ours and avenge the deaths of the greatest wolves of all time.

6 MONTHS LATER

Arista POV:

I wonder if boredom could kill. Probably. I was going to die in my Algebra class because of boredom. Not because I understood what the teacher was droning on about. But because I had given up on ever understanding Algebra.

Tapping my pencil at the edge of my desk I watch the seconds pass achingly slow on the clock.

"Arita," the teacher calls. I snap into attention looking down at the page that was supposed to be filled with notes. She smiled and pointed at the problem on the board. I held back a groan. I hated when she catcalled.

"What did you get for the discriminant." The class turned to me and I waited for the answer to come to me. Of course, it didn't. Because I didn't know. And that was why I didn't raise my hand. I opened my mouth to tell her a random number when I stranger walked through the door. The class's eyes moved off me and onto the dark-haired boy in the front.
