It was midsummer 1997, and the sun was burning Neville's skin. Only a few days parted him from Hogwarts, but he wasn't excited as usual. After Severus Snape, his Professor and now Headmaster killed Albus Dumbledore, everyone feared to go back. The only person who could help them was Harry Potter, but a rumour had speared that he won't come back for this year. It was Neville's last year of school and he actually wanted to show everyone that he is a real Gryffindor. It was not an easy job because his grandmother got, even more, protective after Voldemort's return. She may be one of the reasons why Neville was so insecure but they loved the each other deeply.
His grandmother was taking her daily nap, and Neville took the opportunity to meet up with Y/N. Y/N and Neville had been neighbours since forever, but they first started to hang out after his fifth year. The beautiful girl was on her way back home, at the same time as Neville came back from Hogwarts. They shared a small moment, filled with a shy wave and a smile. Nobody expected it to turn out to more. Over the past year, they got closer and kissed a few weeks ago. At first, he couldn't imagine a beautiful girl like her, to like him. After all, she was everything, someone would love to have a relationship with. She was caring, loving and didn't care that Neville was extremely clumsy. He still questioned himself and didn't believe Y/N's words at all.
Right now, he was sitting on a bench in the small park across to his house. It was close to 5 PM, but the sun was still shining. After a while, he could see Y/N walking towards him. Even in the distance, he could see her smile, which would brighten up his day. Neville stood up and embraced her in a tight hug. Y/N wore this beautiful perfume and it was hard for him to stay away from her, without taking in the scent. The teenager buried her face into his chest and tightened her grip. Without talking, they could express their feelings for each other. It was a strong love.
Both of them were too insecure to admit it, but everyone around them could see it. The two teenagers sat back down on the bench and stayed in a comfortable silence. They sat there, for over twenty minutes without a care in the world. The girl's head rested against his shoulder, while the boy had his arm around her.
Suddenly, a familiar high-pitched voice disrupted the couple. Neville groaned, which caused Y/N to look at him with concern. His grandma walked towards them, with an angry look on her face. The boy knew that he was in deep trouble. Y/N tugged at his shirt, "Who is she?" Neville sighed and gave her shoulder a squeeze, "I am sorry." This confused her even more, but she stayed quiet. Once the angry woman arrived, she literally ripped Neville away from Y/N's grip. "What do you think you are doing? I thought something happened to you, or you even died. How can you scare me like that? Your father would have never done that!" Neville flinched at the mention of his father but let his grandmother rant about how horrible he was.
Y/N watched it speechless until his grandma began to glare at her. "How dare you to manipulate him? No wonder why he had been acting so weird the past few weeks. You are not allowed to see him again." And with that, the older lady snatched a hold of his arm and pulled him away from his girlfriend. While the distance grew bigger, Neville turned around for the last time in a while and gave Y/N a loving gaze.
About one year later, Neville sat in the Hogwarts Express, on his way home. The battle had been two days ago, and everyone was on their way home. Many people lost their battle, but Voldemort had to be defeated. Neville still couldn't believe it, but he took a huge part in it. Without his bravery and strength, the may have lost even more people. Luna was the only person, next to Neville, in the compartment. The girl began to stare at him, which made Neville feel uncomfortable. "You should tell her." Luna caught Neville off his guard. "What are you talking about?" Luna smiled at him, "The girl who you love for almost two years. You may think she forgot about you, but she won't. No one will forget you." Neville looked at her, shocked at her words, "What about my grandma?" Luna just continued to smile and turned around to look out of the window. The girl knew that she didn't have to answer the question, for Neville to know the answer.
Just a few hours later, they arrived at King's Cross Station. In the moment, he left the train for the last time as a student, he could see his grandmother. The old lady had a familiar frown on her forehead and kept looking down at her watch. Once he reached her, the woman didn't greet him with a hug, or even a smile. "It's about time you show up. I have more important things to do." A new feeling began to burn in his chest. "More important than your grandson? More important as to see him after he could have died?" The woman was taken back by his words. She began to stutter words until she found a complete sentence, "How dare you to speak to me like that?" The boy had no emotions on his face, "Since I know that I don't need your or any recognition. I am great how I am. Not since today, but since forever. There had been one person, who loved me for who I am, and I pushed her away for you. Yeah, she is a Muggle, but I don't care."
At the moment, he finished his speech, he left. For the first time, he didn't care that she said about him. There was one person, he wanted to see right now. After taking the muggle bus, he finally arrived at her doorstep. He stood there for a while before he knocked on her door. After a few minutes the door opened, and Y/N stood in the front of him. She couldn't believe it. "Hey," she whispered. "Hey," he answered and the known comfortable silence came back. After a minute, Neville spoke up again, "You must be mad at me, for leaving you there. No words, no sign. I am probably now the biggest loser in your eyes but I-.. I just need to see you. You are the only person, who loves me for who I am and that's why I love you. I love you, Y/N. You are the sun, even when there is a thunderstorm going on in my head. You probably don't want to see me anymore but I had to tell you this." While speaking, he began to stare down at his feet. Once he moved his head up, he saw tears streaming down her face. Y/N just took his hands, "Do you want to come in?"
Neville would remind his children that nobody has to change themselves for someone else. The mother of his children loved him unconditionally.
