Kuma actually does remember who Mattie is. He's Mattie's most beloved and loyal friend so of course he'd remember. The only reason why Kuma asks is because Mattie's gone through so many country names such as Kanata, Nouvelle France, The Dominion of Canada and finally Canada. Kuma only asks is because he wants to make sure he gets it right. He wouldn't want to make a mistake after all. He cares to much to do that. But most importantly, he asks to help remind Mattie of who he is sometimes because when the rest of the world forgets who you are, someone has to remind you.
