(unedited)-
michael hears the spray before he sees it, a thick white cloud descending over the whole town.
it's about fucking time. the last time he passed a radio they were talking about a possible cure for the outbreak from other countries, one that was supposed to be released days ago.
it's been at least a month since michael's been on his own, and though he's strong enough to overpower the zombies, he's honest to god terrified that he'll have to live without luke once this is over.
michael pulls the hood of his jacket over his head and covers his mouth and nose with his left arm, pulling out luke's gun with his right.
he makes his way back to where he's been hiding, an abandoned corner store with no supplies left whatsoever. he ducks under the towel he hung up at the door in anticipation for the release, heading to the counter and flicking on the old radio.
'-ure for the outbreak is not only going to stop the zombies, but potentially return them to their normal state. depending on how long ago they turned, scientists say the cure may reverse the process, painfully - but effectively turning the zombies human.'
michael shuts it off, momentarily overwhelmed. he shakes his head to clear it, hopping off of the counter and rushing to his stash of food in the back of the store. he drops his backpack and shoves a few random protein bars in the first pocket.
he might get luke back.
the thought alone brings tears to michael's eyes as he slings the black backpack over one shoulder. he pulls a sterile mask from a box he found at a hospital a week or so back, nudging it back under the shelf and standing up.
michael opens the door to the shop, and with a deep breath, pulls the mask over his mouth and nose and walks out into the street.
he's amazed yet horrified at what he sees, in the few minutes that he had been inside, at least two hundred people had been turned back and were laying unconscious in various piles on the street.
it's kind of gross if he's being honest, the waves of zombies-now humans, piled up on top of each other.
michael turns the other way and his breath catches in his throat. there's no way.
he thought he'd have to travel for hours to find him. yet, on the top of one of those disrespectful piles of bodies lays his unmistakably lanky boyfriend, the same dumb skinny jeans and black tee shirt he's worn since the day of the outbreak, refusing to wear anything else even though he never got the chance to wash the outfit.
luke's hair is flat against his forehead, and as michael runs up to him he realizes he's waking up.
"luke, luke," michael steps in between someone's legs and reaches for luke, picking him up and holding him to his chest.
luke stirs, panics when he feels someone touching him and lashes out, kicking blindly at whoever's carrying him.
"hey, calm down, it's me, it's michael." he assures softly, laying him down on the sidewalk and hovering over him.
"m-how-i-" luke coughs, gagging a little.
michael sits him up and helps him onto his knees, situating himself directly behind him and holding him up.
luke hiccups and spits, blood hitting the pavement below him. michael reaches up and rips off the mask around his face so he can press a gentle kiss on the back of luke's neck.
"mike," luke coughs again, sniffling a little and grabbing for michael's hand.
"i'm here." michael murmurs, "you good?"
"yeah," he takes a deep breath and michael eases him back down again.
"must be a side effect of turning back," michael brushes luke's hair back from his forehead and strokes his cheek lightly.
luke closes his eyes with a sigh. "i'm mad because i want to kiss you but now my mouth tastes like blood."
michael laughs and takes off his backpack, reaching into the side pocket and pulling out a bottle of water. he helps luke sit up once more, letting him lean into him for balance as he drinks.
a hand locks around michael's ankle and he instinctively whips out his gun, protectively wrapping his other arm around luke.
he looks down and jumps a little, there's a man staring right back at him. michael shifts his position so luke is safely behind him, using his other foot to kick his hand away.
"do you have food?" his voice is weak, and michael bites his lip.
he hesitates before answering, "yeah, give me a second."
michael reaches into his bag and pulls out two protein bars, handing them to the man who honestly doesn't look all that older than him and luke.
the look in his eyes is grateful enough without a thank you, so michael smiles and turns his attention back to luke. he should probably be concerned with the other guy, but he gave him food and he looks strong enough to handle himself.
"you alright?" michael asks luke softly, rubbing his back.
"m'just so tired." he whispers, resting his head against michael's chest.
"close your eyes, i'll carry you to where i've been hiding. there's a pillow and a few blankets plus a stuffed dinosaur from the last shop i went into." michael smiles at the soft giggle that escapes luke's lips at the last item, taking the water from him and picking him up.
"i love you," luke whispers, and michael smiles down at him as he walks.
"i love you too."
