“No, Lexi, no. You can’t be in labor. I forbid you to be in labor.”

“I’m s-sorry John. I really think m-m-my water br-broke.” I stumbled through my words.

At this point, we were both on the ground. John got up to get help and I continued laying there.

I reached for my coat pocket and got my phone out to call my mom.

“Hi Lexi, what’s up?”

“Mom, my water just broke.”

“What?”

“I said my water broke.” This time I said it a little bit louder.

“Are you sure honey? Are you sure it isn’t the babies kicking? Or false contractions?” She sounded really worried.

“Mom. I’m positive. This is different. I’m going into labor.”

“Ok honey. Are you still with John? Do I need to come pick you up? Where are you?”

“Mom, calm down. I’m still with John. We’re at Aiment La Nourriture. He just went to go get somebody to help. He should be back any second.”

“Where is that restaurant? I’ve never heard of it before. Are you sure you and the babies are safe there?”

“Mom, we’re fine. Just meet us at the hospital.”

“Ok, fine.”

She hung up.

John came back about a minute after I hung up with my mom.

He leaned down next to me. “Ok, Pierre is coming. We’re going to carry you out to the car and then I’m going to drive you to the hospital. Are you feeling ok?”

“Yeah, I think I am.”

“Do I need to call your mom?”

“No, I called her while you were getting help. She’s going to meet us at the hospital.”

“What about your dad?”

“My dad.” My voice dropped. “I didn’t even think about him.”

“Do you want me to call him?”

“No. I will when we get in the car.”

“Ok,” he looked up, “here comes Pierre.”

John and Pierre picked me up and lifted me out to the car.

“I have to go back to work but good luck Lexi and John,” Pierre said as he shut the door.
