As I approached the square the next day I heard a ruckus.
"Sixty cents a hundred! I could eat two days on a dime!" Someone yelled.
"Relax boys its gotta be a gag" jack said. He went to go buy one hundred appers for the usual fifty cents.
"That's gonna be sixty cent. New day new price" weasel replied coldly. "Pay up or move on"
"Come over here boys!" Jack yelled angrily as we all met in the center of the square.
"They can't just do that!" "Don't we got no rights?" "We can't afford it!" All the boys had something to say about this price hike. "You got any ideas jack?"
Just then Les jumped in, pushing everyone away. "Give him some room! Let the man work it out!" He yelled. "Hey jack, you don't thinking?" He said after a moment.
"If we don't sell papes no one does" he replied simply.
"What you mean like a strike?" David asked.
"You heard him wes on strike!"
"We can't go on strike. We're not a union." David pointed out "you gotta have membership, and officers"
"What do you call these guys?" Jack retorted well pointing back at the rest if us.
"I vote for jack as president!" Crutchy called out.
"The membership has gotta vote on if we strike!" David pointed out.
"So what's is gonna be boys. Let Pulitzer pick our pockets or strike?" Jack asked
"Strike!" All of us replied together.
Pulitzer and Hurst they think we're nothing. Are we nothing? No!
Pulitzer and Hurst they think they got us. Do they got us? No!
Even thought we dont got hats or badges, we're a union just by saying so, and the world will know!
Jack Davey and Les tried to get into see Pulitzer but they were kicked out before they could get a word in edgewise.
"We gotta tell the other newsies. We need everyone on our side." Jack explained. He broke the boy into groups to cover every part of new York until just Brooklyn was left.
"So who wants Brooklyn?" Jack asked. We were all quiet. I was worried about what spot would say if I wasnt there. What if he told my secret?
"Ill go!" I called out
"Then I'm comin with ya" race said "so am i" replied jack.
