The city of Ornyth now surrounded them as they all walked among the shadows.
Dozens of people milled the streets, their weathered down clothing and dirty skin seeming to be a common trait among them all.
Beggared, as all the people of Terrasen were.
But... there was not a hopeless, sad look in their eyes anymore.
They had been freed from Ardalan, and that gave them happiness, Aelin supposed.
Even though they might all die with Erawan's approach.
Aelin could tell that Aedion's thoughts mirrored her own, as he gazed upon the people, their people.
The ones he had whored for, bled for, fought for.
Aelin wished she could say the same.
Frowning, she shook her head, releasing the thoughts.
There was no way she could start thinking like those bastards. Rolling her shoulders, she sighed as she gazed upon the city that used to be her home, but then tugged her hood lower.
All of their hoods were down, concealing their faces.
Even if they technically weren't breaking Darrow's rules, Aelin wasn't taking any chances.
Close, they were so close to the once amazing Royal Palace of Ornyth, one that used to hold the stag throne.
But the throne was gone, destroyed. The Palace that used to hold it now a reminder of the broken state of Terrasen.
A tomb.
They stuck to the shadows, and no one, not a single person cast them a second glance.
Aelin suddenly remembered the time her, Aedion, and Lysandra had ventured to Illium, and how they received the same greeting.
Though, this time it was different.
She was not here this time for a simple mission to gather information, no she was here to do the one thing that Darrow would seethe seeing.
Her becoming queen.
She walked to where Rowan was, savoring the warmth radiating off his body, the icy air chilling her to the bone.
What good were fire powers, Aelin thought while walking silently across alleyways, if they couldn't provide heat without making a big show.
Then again, her flames did support her need for dramatics.
A few inns and taverns decorated the space around them, and since nobody had paid them any attention so far, they all stepped out of the shadows.
Suddenly a sharp cry shattered the silence among them.
"Lysandra!"
Lysandra turned, they all did to the speaker, and saw Evangeline bounding towards them, Fleetfoot running right next to the little girl.
Evangeline's red-gold hair flew in the wind as she raced towards them, her citrine eyes wide with joy.
Lysandra let out a noise that seemed to be a sob, and rushed towards her ward.
