When lunch was ready we sat next to each other at the bar, the air fairly quiet between us. I could tell he didn't know what to say. I don't think he had ever had a female friend before. He'd never had a girlfriend, and I think he felt intimidated by the fact I had dated people, unlike him.
Harry did his laundry after lunch and after chicken for dinner, I made us some popcorn and we sat together on the sofa, Harry staring at the screen while I pulled up my Netflix account.
"Okay, what kind of movies do you like?" I asked him.
"I don't know." He shrugged.
"Like horror movies, action, drama, black and whites?"
"Action, I guess?"
I scrolled through the action movies until we decided on Armageddon.
While the movie started I set the popcorn on the coffee table and then got up to turn off the lights. I then went back to sit next to Harry, pulling my feet up under me after I grabbed the popcorn bowl and balanced it on my lap.
Harry and I hadn't set up rules or boundaries on how far our "friendship" was going to go, so I wanted to see what he was comfortable doing and how far he would go with me.
I wanted to start small, and gradually make the tension build, so I leaned into his side, quickly discovering that he was already tense.
"Why are you so tense?" I looked up at him.
"Because you're leaning on me." He said, his voice thin.
"Harry, you want a girl to lean on you."
"Why?"
"Because it means she wants to be close to you."
"Oh." He stated.
"Okay, put your arm around my shoulders." I said and he hesitantly did. I shifted closer to him and leaned my head on his chest.
"This is weird." He said after a minute.
"This is how friends with kissing benefits sit with each other."
He frowned before adjusting his arm that was around me.
"Did you sit like this with your exes?" He suddenly blurted out.
"How is that relevant?" I paused the movie before sitting back to look at him, Harry's arm falling off me.
He shrugged.
"No, answer me." I said and he looked away. "You don't get to ignore me now."
He continued to look away from me, the anger now rising in me.
"Ugh!" I screamed in frustration before getting up and storming away from him.
"What?!" He yelled.
"You keep doing this to me! Every time I feel like we're getting somewhere you put up a brick wall. We can't be whatever we are if you keep doing this!" I fought back.
"I don't have to tell you everything about me, Emma!"
"No but at least talk to me!"
"I do talk to you!"
"Yes but you just brush over the surface of everything! I need more than that! I can't be with you if you shut me out!"
His nostrils flared as he breathed harshly.
"You want to know why none of my relationships have ever lasted? It's because i've been with guys who only wanted me for my money or my name or my looks or i've been cheated on. I have trust issues, Harry. I do. And the one thing that was different about you and made me like you was that I knew you would never lie to me. But now... I know you'd never lie to me, you can't, because you never tell me anything to begin with."
His jaw clenched.
"I can't be anything to you if you keep shutting me out, and I really want to be something to you, Harry."
Before I could cry I walked away.
"Emma." I heard him say my name as I reached my door and I stopped before turning to look at him.
He opened his mouth to say something but nothing came out.
The tears then welled up in my eyes and I shook my head, biting my lip.
"Damn it, Harry." I cried before going into my room, slamming the door closed behind me.
I had barely taken two steps forward when the door opened behind me.
I turned to see Harry.
"Look." He gestured with his hands. "I have a past, yes, but I don't see a point in telling you about it when in a few days or a week we'll almost get caught doing whatever the hell it is we're doing and you realise that this is too dangerous and we stop."
I froze.
"So that's what it all comes back to? That i'm the presidents daughter?"
He nodded.
"Yes."
I took a breath.
"You once told me I was shallow, but you can't look past my title to see that i'm a person. I'm a person with feelings and a heart and you- and if you can't see that then..."
I couldn't finish.
"You know what, i'm not the shallow one. You are."
He inhaled.
"Maybe I am, but you're still the presidents daughter." He whispered before turning around and leaving.
My heart broke in my chest as a sob wracked through me.
Just to be bitter I walked up and slammed my door on his back.
Damn it, Harry.
